My cuz has a Athlon II X3 and a 785G DDR2 mobo. The mobo is dead.
- any chance of getting a DDR2 mobo ?
- if not, with a discrete gcard (4850) would it really make a diff whether he got a (DDR3) 760G or 880G mobo ?

with an 880G chipset he would get HT 3.0 and Radon HD4250 IGP... See i would advice to go with an 880G chipset motherboard only... Plus it would be better if he would buy an AM3+ 880G chipset based motherboard like 880GM-USB3L for future upgradibility...

^ 760G costs < 2500, am3+ costs > 5000 (?).

unlikely to upgrade processor.

So ?

ps he may need to buy ddr3 also, so take cost of that into account too.

880GM-USB3L costs 4k and he can buy 4GB corsair ram for 1250... if he doesn't need 4GB ram then Corsair 2gb DDR3 ~ 850 would be good for him...

Get an AM3+ mobo if he is ready to go with DDR3 + Upgrade to BD when it comes out. Cost ~ 2.4k (760G) or 880G (4K+). Finding a DDR2 785 mobo will be slightly difficult.

Else get any DDR2 mobo + the GPU, ought to do the trick. Should not make a difference. But it means reinvesting in a EOL'd platform.

Go with a 880G based board. Decent IGP. Also go for one with a combination of 880G NB and SB710/750, to enable core unlocking. The board i got, 880G USB3 cost me 4.5k from Prime, has 4 DDR3 slots. The USB3L is less expensive by 300 bucks, has 2 DDR3 slots, no esata port on the back, no firewire 400 support. same tech specs otherwise. also the USB3 is bigger than 3L by 2cm. this is another reason to get the 3L if you have a small case.
