Well Mumbai rains and I seems to have some special connection. I am always caught outside traveling when really bad rains hit this region.

This time I was caught returning from Pune to Mumbai after dropping off my aunt from airport to her home in Pune.

And I was caught in heavy rains and almost zero visibility as I crossed Lonavala on expressway.

It was enjoyable and at the same time scary ride at 10kmph on usually high speed expressway as visibility was very poor due to fog/cloud cover.

Have a look at some pics we managed to click from the car yourself.

^ Yeah, and worse was when my friend was returning to Goa from Pune via the Amboli Ghats.

It was freakin scary to say the least.

nice i wish i cud drop off the office someday and go for drive on expressway :P i am highway crazy

Trust me, you dont wanna drive in those conditions. When the best view you have is 10 feet away road lane stripes its scary to drive on highway with some idiotic fools driving full speed even in these conditions. They put themselves and others in danger. And atleast I am not comfortable driving when visibility is that poor. The problem is you cant pull the car over on the roadside on expressway.

Aah... Clicking pic's while driving? :P..

Bad bad boy!.. Lol...

Im sure your enjoyed it at the end of the day. Adventure wasnt it? :P

pics are not taken by me.

my sis took the pics ( I picked her up from her hostel on my way back ). I cant even imagine taking pics while driving in these conditions. I had my head over steering wheel trying to look at the road and follow white lines :P

maybe you are right but it should be somewhat safe if u keep dim lights on and headlights on. it shouldnt be the problem to recognise car ahead of you if the dim light/headlights are on.. the most scary part of driving in such condition is at night!!

i feel like leaving now for a drive at mumbai pune :( nice pics, making me remember last time i travelled on expressway :(

Btw, Hope you were driving with you Fog Lights, Head lights @ High, and your Indicator lights flashing :P.

Yes, yes and yes :P
Almost everyone was doing that :P
the problem is not other cars in these conditions. The highway has lots of turns in this section. And you dont see them until the turn is very close to you. Easy to get confused and smash your car into divider or sidebars.

It was Toyota Innova.

I always travel on weekends from pune(workplace) to mumbai(hometown)..yes and i love the khandala ghats in monsoons..very pleasant but dangerous too :P

regards.

Whoaa.. Now that is some serious bad weather for driving/riding! But great for just walking around :ohyeah:

Have u ever had a drive in Mahabaleshwar during rains.... Then U'll know what real FOG is... :P

oh i always wanted to travel in rains on the highway!! dont get a chance to .. shucks!

the best i do is home to office.. on the WE highway lolzzzz.... and yeah rains main its fuhun!!!! :D

Lol Im from Mumbai, but driving in the ghats at an altitude of 5,000 feet with pretty much 0 visibility in a powerfull car (Nissan Sunny v6 :P) is an exilerating experience.Espeically the insanely long straight road going to Siliguri, you can easily maintain 220kmph+ for over 20 minutes.(Obvously not during the monsoon) :D

hehe, actually i did. Last year during night time while returning to Mahabaleshwar hotel from table land during rains.
That was some scary $#!t as well. But this was something really bad. The pics are taken when rain had slowed down a bit so pics could be taken. Most of the time it was pouring down hard rendering wipers at even full speed useless.
And it was like this until we reached last tunnel on the expressway. Then from Panvel it took me another 2 and half hours to reach my home in bad road conditions.
Thankfully due to rains most people stayed home and traffic was not actually bad. But to avoid low laying areas and traffic i took Thane Ghodbandar road instead of usual Vashi bridge- sion - WE highway. And road was in rally really bad condition until i reached the Thane Jail. ( we complain about BMC soo much and Navi mumbai and thane are in worse condition :P )
And to top it all I had left home at 3AM for airport that morning and was starting to feel sleepy by 5PM. Nice hot cup of tea did the trick from god knows which hotel we stopped in Thane :P
