A little confused about how routers work.

So I have Airtel Fiber, 200Mbps with unlimited data. My house isn't very large but has badly placed wireless landlines which limit the NOKIA modem/router they provided. I have taken a LAN cable from the NOKIA router to the other corner of the house where I have a D-Link router which I connected it too but it caps the WiFi speed and Lan speed through the router at a 100Mbps. The model number is DIR816 and I'd like to upgrade it to whatever can give me full speed through LAN and WiFi on the new router. What are the 'specs' it'll need to do so? Any routers you'd recommend? Not looking for anything fancy, basic consumer grade and cheap works for me, its just for 2 rooms.

The model you currently have, Dlink DIR816 has 100Mbps LAN ports so your speed is limited by that. You'll need to buy a gigabit router and change your LAN cables to CAT 5e or CAT 6 to get above 100mbps. Also, you will not get more than 70-80Mbps on the 2.4ghz band. To get higher speeds you will need to connect to the 5ghz band.


That's a decent router with gigabit ports. The range for the 5ghz network won't be great.

Appreciate it my man, the cables are Cat6, just installed them. The speed variation between 2.4ghz and 5ghz I understand. Don't need much signal strength on the 5ghz really, its 10feet to a wall and maybe 5 feet after the wall, even if its not 5ghz, its okay. thanks for your time again!
 
I don't think you need a second router, it will Double NAT, making it difficult to reach devices within your network. Might be better to just get a switch + access point. Access points can be expensive, so you can just get a second hand gigabit router (pretty decent ones in our sale threads) and use it in bridge mode.
 
i would suggest a mesh router system, 3 nodes that spread out the coverage evenly throughout your home. there are good models from tp link.
 
What are usual speeds on 2.4ghz wifi? I get ~40mbps on mobile and ~70mbs on laptop near Airtel provided router. Also for some reason my D-link 615 router only gives ~25mbps used as bridge even when very near to the router, it also seems to not connect when I set the Airtel router to 802.11n only mode
 
actually a router + cheap switches will also work, if you have extra routers, you can configure the 2nd router in bridge mode, this will help with double nat. in bridge mode, a router acts like a switch.
