Re: A mighty event at work!

@Gannu, do you guys build each piece separate in different locations and then join them together?

I guess that's the in thing in manufacturing now, since ships are getting larger and more complicated.

very curious ...how much does this one cost :D :D :D

This is valued at roughly 280 crore. The profit margins are still very less since we have already delayed the delivery. :(

Exactly. The ship is divided into several blocks which is fabricated in different areas. More like this:

Plates>Panels>Blocks>Mega Blocks>Ship

How long does it take to build this kinda monster ship?

3 years maybe. S.Koreans and Japanese yards does it in under 6~8 months. :P

I do multitasking! :bleh:

On a serious note, I am involved in the designing part so I sit in front of my workstation most of the time working in Autocad, Pro-E and Matlab. Unless production dept. calls us for some clarification. And we visit the yard at least thrice a week to go check if things are in place like how we have issued the drawings. :)

Re: A mighty event at work!

This is kind of a dream job for me. Would love to build such amazing works of machinery... Unfortunately I'm in IT :(
Kudos man.. next time a launch happens... will check if any lazy ppl from here care to join and come down :)

Re: A mighty event at work!

^Next year we will have the other ship which is very similar, ready to be launched. I'll keep you guys posted. And ask HR beforehand, if a massive crowd from my end can be entertained. I don't think there should be any problems either.

A hard hat is just the requirement when you step into the yard as a visitor. :)

Wooah. This sounds good. I would seriously not mind coming to see something like this, and have a TE meet up too.

:)

Re: A mighty event at work!

The invitation mail mentioned -

You may call on personal invites for the same.
So I suppose it should not be a problem. Many folks had their families and kids around as well. :P

Re: A mighty event at work!

Gannu, will you get to be on the ship when tests and checks are being done. Or even travel on it -- while it is still within holding of your company..?

Re: A mighty event at work!

^Not sure man. My boss wants to send me along for her trials but the production and QC depts. get priorities over design folks. :(

Besides, while headed for trials, we need loads of food to be stored for the 3~4 days when she will be at anchorage outside Bombay waters since so much food cannot be cooked inside the galley for 30+ members - the ship operated with 18 crew members during her voyage. So calls for a lot of expense.

Let's see how it goes. :P

Re: A mighty event at work!

^^

Nice. Will there be net availability during that time period..on board the ship?

:)

Re: A mighty event at work!

For the crew, yes but very limited speed since it has to rely on specific satellites for telephony, GPS and internet. Not for us builders when we go for trials.

The worst part is sea sickness. Forget air sickness, some say the crew puke blood during extremely bad weathers when the ship begins to roll. I cannot imagine what the crew has to go through. This vessel has the accommodation quarters in the forward as you may notice in the snaps which is far worse for a ship. A vast majority of vessels have it in the aft region which is ideal.

When I went to Bombay to visit one of her sister ships, the crew complained of bad conditions which forced some of them to sleep in the mess rooms leaving their personal rooms!

Re: A mighty event at work!

Must say first of its kind show-off in the history of TE :D...just awesome :)

Envy Ganesh to be working at such a place :D

Re: A mighty event at work!

You play games the whole time and you're always seen online.
I thought maybe atleast your job must be really shitty.

But then you post this. Unfair I say! :@

PS: The guy to the right is me. The one to the next is my junior counterpart.

@logistopath:You guys are more than welcome to the yard. In fact, the invitation mail had specifically mentioned to call relatives and friends for the event! :)

@6pack: thanks a bunch dude! The prop. is made of CuNiAl - an alloy of Bronze, Nickel and Aluminium. Will put up a video soon.

@asingh: I work for the design department. So designing foundations for several machinery, drawings for propulsion system, HVAC and accommodation system.

If the invitation mail was calling for invites why the hell were you sitting on it. Next time we meet get a balm to rub on your bums :P
