Ok guys...after over an year of waiting around for the perfect time to get a graphic card, i think i hav had enough , and finally my folks are ok with it too.....Now ive got a friend goin over to the US so that is another great sign.....I hav a budget of 20k ( give or take 2k MAX ) ....i've to decide on the 8800gts 640 or the HD 2900XT 512MB........Now i know that the 2900 is not a super card , but do you guys think it would do better to put that extra 2k for it ???? also i will be needing a better supply to go with it......i hav a iNtex Matrix full cabbie...will the cards cr8 any space problems too ???
Also recommend some nice deals from US....i need to finalise it in a weeks time before my friend leaves......

ya.......
currently
a AMD Athlon64 3500+
Asus A8N-VM
Seagate 300x2 hdd SATA
Transcend 1gb ddr
samsung 15" monitor
most probably will be upgrading to
C2d or Quad in Jul- Aug
with 2-3gb ddr2
and a 19" LCD
So please suggest keeping that in mind

HD 2900 XT see still driver lacking but it easily trashed 8800 GTS in benchmarks and overall performance btw if you can wait then revision of R600 i.re R650 will make moure sense than that.. Btw these 2 HD2900XT any day :D

you must have flipped your brains dude

hd2900xt got trashed by 8800GTS in-game :P

benchmarks are useless if something looses in what it was made for doing :|

no use getting a thing using 60-70W more but still loosing in-game :@

which psu do you have phoenix?

still have the 400W intex PSU that came with the cabby...also i wanted to know how much will this card bottleneck on my current proccy ??? will it be too much ??? or will i still be able to get good performance at 1024 ????

firstly it will not run on a 400W intex PSU :bleh:

secondly your proccy will bottleneck it big time & even more @1024x768 :P

you need a better dual core cpu, more ram, a good psu & a bigger cabinet :D

bigger cabinet as to keep it cool :)

Udit, the HD2900XT beats the GTS640 and even the GTX in some benchmarks.

Its still crippled by driver issues. 8.38.2 was the best performing driver till now.

Now they preference of the Buy goes.. 8800GTX > HD2900XT > 8800GTS 640 > 8800GTS 320..

Also, isnt the 2900 cheaper to the GTS?

X2900XT is a better card.

It has better features compared to any NV offering at the moment and it can easily match 8800GTS. In the games it is defeated by 8800GTS in the initial reviews it gave ridiculously low performance which was lower than even x1900xt. thats clear indication that its some sort of driver bug which will eventually get fixed.

Sure it consumes more power but also expect its performance to increase in coming months.

You get better multimedia card which will pass Audio+video over single HDMI to your HDTV, offer better video acceleration and at the same time give good gaming performance.

But you will need decent 500-550Watt Power supply for the same.

Yeah the X2900XT would be a better buy ... and the performance should improve with further driver releases ... it's performance , like it's price is in-between the 8800GTS and the 8800GTX ... the only con is the power consumption

jeez...........i think i forgot to mention that ill be buyin a PSU along with the card.....so dont worry about that........well so i think the 2900xt is a more preferred choice ........coz even i think i wont regret the decision once the driver issues are resolved a bit and maybe its better to go for a better buy coz ill be gettin this card to last for at least until i start earnin myself.......now the proccy nd ram will take around a month to be replace, ie in aorund jul or aug 1st week.......and my friend is goin to US in jun....so i think i will get the card and PSU now and upgrade my cpu stuff when i get more dough.......will that be fine ??? and what PSU do you guys recommend from the US ?? or should i buy one from here???? Coz the card will cost me around 17.5k and then ill hav at max 4k for the PSU.......which one will do ??? keep in mind my future upgrade

@Funky

Dont say it will perform better coz we dont know yet...You cant make such a gross comment...

8800GTS is a better buy IMO...

I dont recomend the XT...consumes 350w...the frigging thing...

2900XT is neither VFM nor the flagship...

@phoenix-

Try and get the Corsair HX620 for 7K.

Good Psu and has 5 yr warranty i think.:)

Also not much pricey compared to US rates and u get local warranty.

If you need smething cheaper, see if you get the Zebronics (skyhawk) 640 for about 5k.

Even cheaper- seventeam ST-500-BKP for 3.5-4K or Coolermaster extreme power 600.

I hope this handles the config u have planned.

For power supplies from the USA, though a good psu rarely goes bad, but still a lil risk exists.

I think the OCZ GX 700 and FSP GLN 700 were going fro quite reasonable prices few weeks back.:P

If u see, the Corsair HX620 is just few hundred bucks cheaper there, so makes much more sense to get it from here.

On which power supplies can handle the 2900, i will leave that for my Gurus to reply.

I have a 550 watter and i think even normal users like me have to shift to HX620 and above like say the Silverstone 850:devil: to handle the 2900 and above cards without bothering about the freak possibilty of lack of enough juice.:P

Better get the Corsair HX620, if you are looking to get the Ati card ... though the seventeam or cm will be just about enough .

@vij : I agree ... the x2900xt's performace is better than the 8800gts but not as good as expected atleast atm and somehow doesn't justify the large diff in power consumption

Honestly, people are talking too much about Power Consumption..

Who gives a damn?

Its not like your Electricity bill will double or anything. Infact nowhere close to being 1.1 times as much even. Maybe a 5% increase, overall. If you can afford High end card, you can afford to pay power bills surely.

Not just talking about overall power consumption it's the performance per watt ... though I'm sure most of the things will be fixed in the r650 :P

2900XT has better features, like full HD decoding, and hdmi with audio. The performance difference in games will not be noticeble at low resolutions, which he is going to use now.
Edit: As posted by xfactor in another thread, the 2900 does not have the UVD. So it loses its main advantage over nvidia :P

lol it still performs great.

The reason people are disappointed is that it did not clearly outperformed GTX. But that does not make this a bad card.

And the performance part i was mentioning was regarding the weird below x19k performance in some games. That will def improve as its clearly a driver bug.

You will need decent enough PSU for any of these cards. He plans to upgrade later. So he is anyway investing in PSU. All all decent enough PSU will power this card.

It is priced at flagship cost. so no wonder its not flasgship card. Neither is 8800GTS.

But this card is outperforming even GTX in some games. That tells you the potential of this card. Its anyway going to be better overall performer.

If performance / watt is the only criteria then 8600GT will be best card. but is it?

This is high end segment and performance / watt takes back seat here.

It has better features, its got all the frills you need for $399 card.
