wow.....a real battle going on huh.....well i think i hav e decided to go on for the 2900xt coz seeing the huge perf inc with only a small driver change, i think the card has a lot of potential.....now i just hav to decide on the psu (most probs the CM 600) , and ll be set......thanks guys.....and if you people see a good offer on the 2900 can you please tell me ???

well when u are about to spend almost a months salary for playin games......you gotta pay attention to these battles ....hehe

lol it still performs great.

The reason people are disappointed is that it did not clearly outperformed GTX. But that does not make this a bad card.

And the performance part i was mentioning was regarding the weird below x19k performance in some games. That will def improve as its clearly a driver bug.

You will need decent enough PSU for any of these cards. He plans to upgrade later. So he is anyway investing in PSU. All all decent enough PSU will power this card.

It is priced at flagship cost. so no wonder its not flasgship card. Neither is 8800GTS.

But this card is outperforming even GTX in some games. That tells you the potential of this card. Its anyway going to be better overall performer.

If performance / watt is the only criteria then 8600GT will be best card. but is it?

This is high end segment and performance / watt takes back seat here.

It has better features, its got all the frills you need for $399 card.

2900XT does not clearly beat 8800GTS and still hogs a whoppinnggg 240W( total sys consumption-350w...)

Funny that u say power consumption doesnt matter here in India...it matters even in the perfomance segment, especially if theres no clear winner...

If the 2900XT beats 8800GTS by a decent magin in all games, fine- go host this power gorger, but unfortunately it gets beaten by 8800GTS in a number of games...

yep, couldn't be more correct :bleh:

@vij, i thought that the HD 2900XT took some 220 W power at load compared to the 170W by 8800GTS/X, no??

350Watts total sys power consumption with X2900XT...

abt 70w more than 8800GTS...

You can crunch all you want but save power while you can, atleast when its not going to hurt u...:P

ah ok, u meant the total system wattage, well that depends on how much of an OC u do the proccy and what proccy u running, no. of HDD's etc

but yes on an average a system without GPU would consume about 115-130 W of power at load

well to tell you the truth.....i really dont care if the cards gonna take more power.......coz i wanna get a better performer and can spend a bit on the PSU....if the CM 600 can be enuff for my future setup , its amazin......

CM 600 will be barely enough for this setup, its got 34A @ 12V = 408W

Your system will be using around 400W power easy

Problem comes when the capacitors start degrading in a years time and O/P of the CM 600 falls by around 20% (average estimate if you are planning 24*7 use of the rig); then your PSU can't handle it

So, its better to get something with atleast 40A on 12V for 2 years of normal usage

for around 4k the CM600 was the best bet

The Corsair 620HX as suggested by many is a good buy, 48Amps on 12v, but its around 7.5K

You can ask around for the prices of CM850, dont remember the ratings but it should be good enough, iirc it was around 6k

EDIT : I think it was the CM650, dont recall, you'll have to check

so you sayin that i might need to pick up a better PSU huh....well .....lemme at least get the card and then cajole my folks a bit

hmm, on ur current PSU u wont be able to run that Card

and yes u need a better PSU, atleast for a stable working environment (always try and stay above 30% of the threshold)

You can always pick up the CM600, use it for a year or 1.5 and get a new one later

Quite a contradictory statement Vij.. Lol..

I guess you havent seen it with the 8.38.2 Drivers. Everything is a Driver issue currently, as the new drivers roll out, which is soon btw, the Performance will be much better in all games.

If you can, try getting an OCZ GamerXtreme 700W. I think its hovering around 150$.

Edit : Newegg.com - OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply 100 - 240 V - Retail

140$ !

115$ After Mail in Rebate though.

^^ Nice PSU :

Specs +3.3@36A,+5V@30A,+12V1@18A,+12V2@18A,+12V3@18A,+ 12V4@18A,-12V@0.8A,+5VSB@3.0A

One small q tho :

4 +12V Rails for a total of 72Amps

that equals 72*12=864W

max power input of this psu is 700W

Am i missing something here?

Its OCZ ;).

They underate most of their PSU's.

But actually, its just that you can add up rail power just like that.

Theorectically its capable of 850W + yes, but practically it provides just above 700W.

ah so thats the max u can get, but continuous it would max out at 700W

that would give what, 50-55Amps on the 12V lines

really....
ok any links...:)

The Corsair 620 would be a better choice and is available for 7k all inclusive ... unlike the ocz 700 it can provide all it's amps over a single rail and it's also modular ... dont read too much into the rebates getting them could take a long time
