Yesterday I went to Aero-India 2009

There only I realized that my A540 is failing to autofocus at telephoto zoom :S (only telephoto, wide angle and macro is perfect)

I tried MF also but no joy :@

Few times it managed to focus but most of the time it was out of focus

I tried both indoor and outdoor shooting, but pictures are just out of focus :@

Tried factory resetting, tried everything which I thought might fix the problem.

What can be the possible problem??

few pictures for reference to the problem:

Hmm yes its a definite problem. I believe you need to get your camera checked at the service centre. Canon have a large service center presence so I believe you wont have too much trouble servicing it.

means basically it's a hardware failure? I thought it's software/firmware.

And repairing a digicam might cost nearly equal to the original cost.

^^ To be frank I really have no clue if its a hardware failure or not. But AFAIK any AF issue is due to hardware rather than a software problem.

You can at least ask the service centre for an estimate to check the repair cost.

The only time I saw that much blurring on telephoto on my 720IS is when I accidentally covered the AF lamp with my finger. the cam assumed Im shooting for macro lol!

Is there any way of deleting the firmware and then restoring it again?

Basically reseting the firmware??
