Security will always be an individuals' headache,
It's Nilekani's job only. I don't expect any kind of brainy work from our govt, but Nilekani should've known that a Universal ID card can't have PII. Safeguarding PII on aadhaar card can't be an individual's headache because you are supposed to give copies of your card to all kinds of unauthorized people.
Protecting PII is an individual's responsibility but what can you do when govt asks you to hand it over to unknown persons? BTW, only people trained to protect PII can understand this concept. You must've read numerous posts on TE that how random people siphoned off their money over phone. Well, these people were never familiar with PII.
Anyways, can you give me one reason why an absolutely new ID was needed for all the great initiatives by govt? BTW, it's no point mentioning the political parties. It's just Indian govt for me.
Can you tell me why an existing ID, such as PAN card, couldn't be used as a Universal ID? It could've been upgraded with bio-metric details. PAN card would've been the best universal card keeping India's progress in mind. Regardless of whether a person is a rickshaw puller or a graphics designer, having a PAN card would've removed lots of kinks from our tax system. Our govt wouldn't have to come up with lots of schemes for the upliftment of poor.
4 years ago govt said that they were going to make Aadhaar card mandatory for every Indian citizen. I showed sincerity and applied for it in the first batch. I joined the queue at 5 am alongwith daily wage earners, SUV owners and salaried people. I was flabbergasted to see people from all walks of life and wondered why my fellow citizens didn't show the same level of enthusiasm to get a PAN card? They didn't want to be part of India's progress by paying taxes, however meager that be, and yet wanted to leech off benefits from the salaried tax payers? I really commend govt's thinking.
I got my PAN card when my salary wasn't even eligible for taxation. I still filed my IT returns for 3 years with zero tax liability. Govt couldn't ask a rickshaw puller to get PAN card but harassed every Indian citizen to scurry for an Aadhaar card.
BTW, my PAN card doesn't have any PII. Don't know how the current lot looks like.
Though it is not mandatory, having it makes getting things done lot easier.
Earlier, you were supposed to show 2 proofs and now it'll be 1. Govt just wants to push more people for Aadhaar card that's why they deliberately made things smoother with Aadhaar. Otherwise, can you tell me what magical info an Aadhaar card contains that other existing cards can't provide? I moved to new place 5 years ago and had to get lot of things done afresh. I haven't had to bring out my Aadhaar card in 4 years to get things done.
I just fear for my biometric data that they take. Can we file a PIL against that. I don't want to hand over my biometric data, no matter how secure they say their system is.
Even if govt ropes in 100 Nilekanis, you can never be sure of the security/privacy of your bio-metric data with the Indian govt (and govt employees).
- Our govt, army expect kickbacks in defense deals, at the cost of national security
- You'd often come across in news about defense personnel and govt employees selling off sensitive info to our neighbors.
- We have lots of politicians with criminal background
- When it comes to scandals, our politicians, ministers make world records
- Poor can't afford LPG and yet our ministers, politicians are gifted with tablets to watch porn
^^ How can you rely on such people to safeguard your bio-metric data
I think Indian govt should approach Chinese to make India Aadhaar compliant. Except bio-metric data, I guess by now they have gathered all other info necessary to print Aadhaar cards for every Indian
. Ofcourse I am exaggerating but not much wrong.
