we have like most of institutes,we have had our p2p blocked, and pron sites blocked.

Could they some how block direct downloads depending upon the file type, like they allow pdf files, but block mp3 files?

and can they block students from using free anonymous proxy servers, like they won' work.

if I am a network administrator how much more can I do ?like can I can I know who is using using anonymous proxy servers or who is downloading how much?

waiting replies:)

yes u can definately block files based on the file format, not the extension... So you can block a mp3 file, although it mayb renamed to doc.... But u do need specialized routers for doing this .... or mayb even some local software mayb able t do it !!

Yes. Everything can be tracked provided your network admin has enabled the access logs. The websites you are visiting, what you are downloading. All the activities are logged in the access logs of the gateway or proxy server from where it can be seen that which IP address (internal) has requested for which website.

You are scaring me:huh:

I had surfed some, well! illegal sites and downloaded Gbs of stuff of indexed directories .Now from the same site I could download rar files, exe files but not mp3 or mpg or avi files. *Edited*

Can they also block anonymous proxy servers(I kinda always thought changing proxy servers would work always),like I was using some malysian proxies, now none of them seem to be working or the proxies just arn't working .

It depends on your network admin. If he suspects that there is increase in traffic then he can always look at the logs and see what has been happenening and block sites etc.

He can block the access to the proxy servers also. But it might be just that the proxy server has stopped working. Anonymous proxy servers don't last for too long anyways.

Thanks!The ovious question
Is there any way to get round them, like how do I search for new proxy servers(I used hide ip platinum, from which I got the malaysian proxy servers)
any other softwares like that.
