About MCB for an ac

Hi,

For old window acs with no star rating, 10-15 year old, how much amp of mcb is recommended for 1.5 ton and 2 ton ac? C series is used at home, right? Suppose 1.5 ton needs 16a but 32a mcb is used then can it cause issues?

Thanks

The mcb is just a fuse that can be reset.
32a mcb will not trip until more then 7200watt of power goes through it. So in a event of short the wiring will get burnt.
So stick with 16a to 20a C serious mcb.
16 to 20a for 1.5 or 2 tons?
What if an ac requires c 16a but 32a mcb is used, i.e. more than the required amount. Can it create any issues?

16A in more than enough
It's not actually.

His AC is old non inverter and 2 Ton so compressor start will have larger kick then 16 Amp.

You should atleast have 32 Amp mcb for 2 TON AC.

Today's inverter AC compressor doesn't consume that much starting amp old AC does.

Also buy MCB from reputable brand

2 ton AC will mostly be 3 phase wiring connected . Completely different MCB for that . Mostly an old 1.5 ton AC will consume from 1800 to 2200 w . You provision an MCB for upto 2500 w .

Yes he did but I am specifically asking for an exact amp mcb for these two old acs as the older mcbs are 16a for 1.5 and 32a for 2 tons. Moreover what if 32a is used for the 1.5 tons, no issues?
Yes, MCBs do have an upper spec, similar to a fuse. If your AC requires a 16A one, and you wire it with a 32A, in the event of a fault it can now pull 16 more amps in excess before the MCB triggers and disconnects the AC, and by then it might be too late (fire, burnt wires). Do not overspec your MCB.

The C curve MCBs which have the letter C are designed for appliances and machinery which have a high inrush current, where the momentary high start up current which can go as high as 50amps will not trip a "C" rated MCB.
So a good branded MCB like legrand, Schneider, ABB of 16A C curve should suffice even for a 2 ton.
