Hello,

I was putting my PC in hibernation, when accidently I fell on the PC table quite hard.

The PC moved quite violently, altough it did not fall down and hibernation was successfull.

I would like to know if this is likely to damage my hard disks (500GB, 640GB and 160GB) or put any bad sectors. I have very important data on these disks which I can't afford to lose.

Please let me know your opinion and how to check if there is any damage.

Thanks.

thanks, will check but is this likely to introduce any bad sectors

i doubt.... HDDs can absorb pretty gud amount of shock/vibration...

Just check if ur PC boots, if it does, it means that the file system is intact and no harm is done :)

(HDDs need to be formatted or in severe cases replaced only if they fall from a height of 6 inches or more)

It should not have caused any Bad Sectors or losses of data but to still be on the Safer side check for Bad Sectors...by going in your Drives Properties..then tools and then Error Checking.

This should do the Trick, although it may take some time but it is definitely worth the wait.

Give it a Try!!

lol i have kicked my office comp hard and it has fallen on its side many times :P nothings happened

I had a PC which never booted up unless you gave it a hard whack. Hard enough to lift off sideways.

Nothing happened to the hard disks. The mobo was slightly defective and had to be repaired, but that rig is still in active duty.

HDDs are pretty durable. I've dropped a notebook HDD while it was running and copying data on the floor from a height of 2 feet. Nothing happened, even to the transfer. That being said HDDs are also notorious for failing all of a sudden. One can never tell. In general 95% of the time its a defective piece that fails.

If it is still working fine, nothing would have happened to it.

But NEVER trust HDDs, u never know when they'll fail. You kick them 100 times, they'll still work, but one fine day for no reason, they'll stop working. So regardless of whether or not ur disks are fine, keep backups of IMPORTANT data.
