My friend wants to purchase a laptop and his budget is around 35k. His requirements are basic computing, watching movies, music, very little to negligible gaming.
He has zeroed down to Dell and Acer. No particular model has been fixed yet.
Please suggest what he should opt for.

Is there any website where i can see the complete specs and preferably price too ?
Also my friend is little bit inclined towards Dell for the simple reason he says "sab log dell hi lete hain". I told him that recently Acer has come up with VFM lappies. So what i tell him to convince him to buy Acer. Any particular disadvantages of one brand over another?

You can view specs here.. The price quoted as 35K+, but it should be available for around 33K with local dealers.

Between Acer and Dell, with Acer you get more features at the same price point. Acer has a lot better speakers and possibly screen is also better. Dell is supposedly better service (mainly due to their on-site support rather than Acer's carry-in). Long-term reliability of Acer is not yet as established as Dell. but then Dell also reportedly has a lot of issues in its new line-up (specially Studio).

I see that the OS is Linux. But i suppose it wont be difficult to put XP or Windows Se7en right..like driver problems and all should not be there.

Acer does provide Vista and XP Drivers on a DVD, at least for previous models this was true. You can check with the dealer. Otherwise, Windows XP, Vista, 7 drivers are available online - both for 32 n 64 bit OS.

At 29k for the Linux version of Acer Aspire 5536G is a steal. Go for it. The Vista Home Premium version will cost you a little more.

^^ yup my frnd got a quote for Inspiron 15 and one of the things in quote is

"Integrated CREATIVE Sound Blaster(R) X-Fi MB Audi 1o Software Solution"

what is this and is it needed ? I dont think so...it is charged separately

AFAIK, This Creative Audigy solution is some software that allows you to enhance the output of your speakers. But it is not so useful, as this could be done using some other alternative software.

Hmmm.....

Provided like me your friend can gamble with 32K then

Asus X83VB x2 , From Ebay seller techless.in can be the best laptop that can be bought in this range... comes with 4gb, vista x64 home premium, C2D t6400, nividia 9300 on board + designer paint (no need of laptop skin), 250gb hdd, LED LCD, 5 sata ports , HDMI port, E-sata port....Phew!!! the list of feature is too long... and cherry to the cake 4.1 digital surround sound speaker system, one the best laptops in terms on speakers .....

Now the Catch.....ie the gamble.... Does not come with Indian warranty rather than 1 years dealers warranty... About me i didn't care as my little sis has to use it and i knew how much she can stress it.... So stress beakdown was out of question... So the laptop is in clear until some freakish thing happens to the Motherboard... rest i can get it fixed... worst case scenario... i can strip and sell lappy to recover at most 10K so really risk is 22K actually and if it works for 1 year .. i think since very few people go for extended warranty.. especially ones with limited budget. i can safely say my chances are same as dell /acer or any other laptop post warranty...

All the risk assuming seller will not help with warranty issue... what if he does help.... the laptop retails around 620 USD + - few shops tax shipping, so really you can get this laptop at the US prices...

Actually my friend has made up his mind to get this Inspiron 15 laptop only.
He also has the quotation. I have attached it here. Please guys have a look and tell me what all things he can remove / add from this quotation to get a better price/value ratio.
Somethings i suggested are

1. Remove the Mcafee AV
2. Some Wifi card is there, i told him to remove, it is something related to increasing wifi range. Not needed i suppose.

yes mcafee is not needed at all

and abt that wofi thing- i dont know but some people prefer the a/g/n to be future proof!!

wats it actual use i dont know!!

Mcaffe Antivirus is Free 30 days trial....

I donot think you can remove wifi card... will be poor judgement

if you buy a laptop without wifi card... sooner or later you will need it...

^^ but that card is only for increasing the range right?
I mean the default laptop wifi still should be there na ?

nope... open the back of laptop ...wifi cards nowadays are upgradeable...

(googled for pic actually but really took apart the whole laptop apart today actually nearly gave owner a heart attack as lappy was only few months old....)
