Review Acko insurance, all advertisement, all gas. Worst insurance experience.

I took car insurance from Acko and it was worst decision ever. Reinforces that all these new age, internet first, investor funded companies are not all that friendly as they claim to be in their advertisements. Should have gone to policy bazaar and bought one from the established ones.

I have taken vehicle insurance from other providers like Tata AIG, HDFC Ergo over a period of 11+ years and have never had any issues in terms of claims whenever needed. I would strongly recommend to stay away from Acko, simply for the reason below:

You cannot get in touch with the claim handler. The claim handler will not get in touch with you. For every time you want to communicate something, you have to call their call centre and request a call back for the next available slot which can be next day. Sometimes the claim handler will not even call you back despite you raising the request. When he does call back he will not make any attempts to resolve your issue, but instead will try to end the call as early as possible. So for a simple communication, you will have to wait days. You can do a to and fro communication with Pluto faster than that.

My experience:

When I took the insurance, I registered with my phone number, my email ID, made payment from my credit card but the car was in company name as the ownership transfer was pending. The company has ceased to exist long back but thankfully the RC transfer was finally completed in my name last month, June.

Unfortunately I had to make a claim in April and therein my nightmare began, first they asked for N number of documents like memorandum of association, PAN Card of company and what not. I told them that it is not possible now. I asked them to refund my insurance money if they could not handle a claim as none of this was asked or verified or informed when they conveniently took my money as payment for the insurance.

After multiple calls, they finally suggested that they will transfer the policy in my name and process the claim as reimbursement, when the RC is transferred in my name. All this went on till May and I had to call them 4-5 times just to get this confirmation in writing. The claim handler said he is just sending a mail and then would disappear for days without any communication.

Not to mention that the policy does not cover half the things and I had to bear a major chunk of the expenses despite it being a comprehensive zero dep policy. On top of that you have to pay 7K rupees just to put up a claim, 2K for the claim and 5K for getting it done through authorised company workshop. They want you to get your vehicle repaired from the list of shady workshops on the edges of the city.

Now that the RC is transferred in my name, instead of processing the reimbursement as confirmed on mail, they have come up with another excuse to extort more money. Now I have to give them some NOC or consent for the policy transfer otherwise I have to pay back the no claim bonus which they had given me at the time of buying the policy. Nowhere did they inform me of this nonsense when they confirmed to me on mail that, “This mail is to inform you that we will settle your claim in reimbursement mode, reimbursement will be done once you complete the process of Ownership transfer to you.”.

I wanted to get rid of this disease called Acko from my life as soon as possible but seems I will have to suffer a bit more.

PS: I must have called them over 25 times for going through one claim and reimbursement, which I have not got till now. After all the deductions, the reimbursement will just be a meagre sum of 20K, if I am lucky. Just slightly more than the insurance premium that I paid.

That's crazy.

I thought of going for Acko insurance once but on finding that Amazon is involved as an investor, I gave up and went for one of the traditional providers.
Anything related to Amazon or tech startups, we'll be fine as long as you are on the happy path but the moment you stray away and fall in the edge cases its a major risk.

Personally, I think for something as involved as insurance it is better to spend a little more money upfront and go with well known ones rather than risking our financial and mental well-being.

Most of the insurance companies out there are just running a scam in the name of insurance to extort money from the general public. You should never trust companies like Acko whom you hear more about through advertisements rather than word of mouth from common people appreciating a good company. The sad truth is there isn't much you can do legally about it either as all these things are cleverly mention by them on a paper or a document in fine print which you might not even get to see before you purchase their shitty insurance.

I think you should complaint with Insurance Ombudsman
This should be your legal recourse.

A few pointers:

  • Insurance is for the vehicle + owner combo
  • Only the owner can initiate a claim and receive payment.
  • Upon change of ownership, there's a 2 week grace period where insurance covers the new owner, but it has to be transferred to new owner's name within that period, else afterwards your vehicle will essentially be un-insured
Not to mention that the policy does not cover half the things and I had to bear a major chunk of the expenses despite it being a comprehensive zero dep policy.
Zero dep policy should cover full price for damaged parts. They are trying to defraud you.

On top of that you have to pay 7K rupees just to put up a claim, 2K for the claim and 5K for getting it done through authorised company workshop. They want you to get your vehicle repaired from the list of shady workshops on the edges of the city.
  • ~2k mandatory deductible is standard. WTF is this extra 5k for?
  • They cannot force you to get stuff repaired at a specific place, it is entirely up to YOU
  • Only exception to above is for cashless claims, where they directly pay the service centre, instead of you paying them first, and then getting that amount as refund from Acko
  • Always get repairs done at authorized service centers only, using genuine OEM parts
  • Independent garages may use fake/refurbished/used parts while billing the full price of genuine parts

...therwise I have to pay back the no claim bonus which they had given me at the time of buying the policy. Nowhere did they inform me of this nonsense when they confirmed to me on mail that, “This mail is to inform you that we will settle your claim in reimbursement mode, reimbursement will be done once you complete the process of Ownership transfer to you.”.
  • This one, unfortunately, is on you. If the previous owner hadn't made any claims, they would have gotten a discount on the premium.
  • Since you are the new owner, you need to pay full premium, i.e. refund the NCB to Acko
  • NCB can be transferred to another vehicle belonging to the same owner, but can't be transferred to new owner.
  • For e.g. if you had a Maruti 800 for 5 years and made no claims on it, you get the max cap NCB of 50%
  • Now if you buy a car worth crores, you can transfer the NCB to that and pay only 50% of the premium which will run into lakhs
  • But you will have to start paying full premium on the 800, which is nothing compared to the full premium on an exotic car.

After all the deductions, the reimbursement will just be a meagre sum of 20K, if I am lucky. Just slightly more than the insurance premium that I paid.
Seems like this is a carefully orchestrated ploy to get rid of "risky" customers. They make max profit when you pay premium but never claim. So they want to frustrate you and make you give up not only the claim amount, but their "service" as well. They want you to think "oh they're giving back my premium, so it's fair they don't pay for the damages"
But the reality is refunding you the insurance amount and losing you as a customer is cheaper than paying in full for the damages. This is not ethical or even legal.

This is the reason , i pay higher premium and get policy directly from their in house broking.(like maruti broking and hero broking)
It then becomes their responsibility to handle everything and i don't have to run pillar to post.

Unfortunately they hide so many things like COMPULSORY DEDUCTIBLES, FILING CHARGES etc that you will end up paying a lot of money even on zero dep comprehensive policy.
this is practised by most insurers these days.

Yes thats why I refused to get it done. The car has always been serviced at the authorized service centre for its whole life, 7 years now.

I should have asked the company only to get the insurance done instead of rushing to getting it done on time, that was my mistake. Did that coz the company lease period was over and the car was to be transferred to my name but that itself took its sweet time.
And probably should have made the truck driver pay who scraped the rear side panel. Moron did not even have a side view mirror on the truck and was trying to squeeze into my lane.

Exactly. They have not been around long enough to figure things out.

Don't budge: it's your and your choice alone. And since they are unwilling to provide 0 dep/full coverage, you might have a strong case against them. Talk to a lawyer or something.

My expereince varies witk acko.
I bought a tata nano back in 2018 May. On 2019 I bought acko insurance policy. Back in 2020 during the lockdowns (may 2020), I hit a cow on the highway and had to initiate an insurance claim through acko. They asked for pictures of all 4 sides of the car showing the extent of damage, kilometer reading, vehicle identification tag, driving licence by email. On the same day, they called me and informed me that they have assessed the damage and made an estimate of some 7k as repair cost which includes cost of front bumper , one headlamp, etc. If I agree with their estimate they will transfer the amount to my bank account, otherwise I can send them estimate from tata motors authorized workshop if I think their estimate is wrong.
Since the authorized workshop of tata motors was closed due to lockdown, the manager of the workshop sent a staff to my location to give an estimate . Upon arriving, the staff informed me that he can fix the bumper and front body and since the workshop was closed he will do it by some other garage. Cost for bumper repair and headlight mounting was 1200 which I bargained at 1000. Next, I called acko for confirmation of estimate and transfer of funds, they initiated payout which I received the next day. Nice gains in lockdown :) . I was told to take photos of the car 4 sides after repair complete and keep the bill of repairing as it will be required if I make any subsequent claims of my car. After few days the acko policy expired and I bought another policy from thhe showroom itself .
