So I got my shining new 2x 1TB 7200.12 (ST31000528AS) HDD's... They were detected by BIOS & Windows both. I have created partitions on them. I used Ontrack Easy Recovery's disk diagnostic tools to scan for errors twice on each HDD & they passed each time. Then comes SMART test (extended) & again both drives passed without any problem... Though one of them had reallocated sectors but the SMART status in Everest told me its status as "OK:value is normal"....

Now the hard part. The seek time is horrible but that was accepted... the seek noise of actuator arm is also slightly more than my earlier 7200.11 (500GB) HDD... Which is also something I can live with. The HDD's are much cooler & hardly audible while running.

The thing which got my attention is that when I shutdown my computer both HDD's make a single click sound. Its profound & seems like the actuator arm returning to its Landing zone.. Both HDD's are not making any continuous or random clicking noise.

So should I be worried about the actuator noise from both HDD's.:huh:

Thats the sound of the HDD Heads parking off the platters. A 1 Tb disk would be multi platter, hence you would get this clicking sound.

So, Njoi.

^. This particular model has only two platters.. In fact all my HDD's are two platter. But none of them make such large sound on shutdown. I put my ears to my old 7200.11 & it produced a very faint click on shutdown (hardly noticeable) but on these new 7200.12 I can hear the sound from 2-3 meters also :(

Chill buddy, for some drive 'series', this does occur and it is normal. Stop thinking too hard. If there was an issue, smart would have picked it up already.

I am jittery 'coz I will be putting everything on these... I dread the scenario if it fails... I did not read about it in any of the review or forums so am getting apprehensive... :ashamed::ashamed:

Besides, both of them make the exact same sound and at exactly the same decibel.

That kind of consistency means that they are operating as per the design of that particular model.

Now you would be in trouble if both werent making the exact same sound but they do... so enjoy your RAID (I'm assuming that's why you got 2 ;))

RAID is on my future plans that's why I got these... Right now I am still on SATA - I.. :(

One of the HDD is making slightly lower sound.. a fraction less may be... but still noticeable when compared to other series...
