Hi Friends,

I need an urgent advice - a friend wants to sell his PS3 for 9K with one controller. I am not much in gaming but just thought of picking it up. Then I saw it here that people selling xbox for around 10K so price difference is not much. Hence I like to know which one to get ?

One advantage of xbox for me is that I have one XBOX wireless controller for PC which is brand new and used it only 4-5 times and lying idle. If I buy XBOX, then I can use then with it and will have two controllers (correct me if I am wrong).

I played only a few games in my life on PC - mostly racing, sometime flight simulator, tomb raider and prince of persia. For these kinds of game which one is better? also, does flight simulator available on PS3?

Thanks
Yusuf

Re-Posting my reply in this thread:

Hey Yusuf. If you're a casual gamer, then either one of the consoles would suffice your gaming needs. How old is that PS3 that your friend is selling? If it's the old fat model, then it's probably best to stay away from it. You could invest in an Arcade Xbox 360 and YES, you will get a wireless controller with it. Most of the games which you have mentioned are available on both the consoles. PS3 has a better range of exclusive titles. Uncharted series would be a close equivalent of Tomb Raider series. You have the entire Prince of Persia HD collection available for the PS3. In terms of Racing, both consoles share a majority of multi-platform games, but both have their own exclusives Racing sim titles, i.e. Forza Motorsport 3 for X360 and Gran Turismo 5 for PS3. I have very limited knowledge about hardcore flight simulator games on the PS3, you'll probably have Apache: Air Assault, Blazing Angels series & H.A.W.X series. These aren't exclusives tough. They are available on the 360 as well. 360 has Ace Combat 6 as an exclusive title. It was an awesome flight combat game. So take your pick. :)

Mods you can delete my earlier post in that thread.

Thank you both for your reply.

It's PS3 FAT version - 2 years old but in pretty much unused. Is that a problem with FAT version?

@Ethan_hunt, can I use my PC wireless controller with xbox as second controller?

Thanks

The FAT were older models of the PS3, which were prone to a hardware fault which was dubbed as "YLOD" a.k.a 'Yellow Light of Death'. It's not bound to happen to all FAT models, but it was major observation that the older models were the ones that faced this issue. So buying one, without warranty, is inviting trouble in the long run.

As for the controller, YES, you can use your existing wireless controller with any Xbox 360 right now.

ooos, that's bad then, is there any signs or way to check for PS3 approaching YLOD? thanks for letting me know.

What about XBOX? Does Jasper also prone to famous RROD?

No way to check whether its heading towards YLOD, better avoid it.

Jasper's have really low probability of RROD less than 5%

@yusuf, in case you decide NOT to buy PS3, please ask your friend to contact me. I am interested.

Dude, it's not as bad as the RROD for the Xbox. The failure rate was less than 5% for the PS3. For an allround machine i would say buy the PS3. It is a fantastic multimedia device. You can watch blu ray movies, browse photos, listen to music, heck even browse the internet. If you're only interested in the games part then it is a tough choice between the Xbox and the PS3. I have both the PS3 and the Xbox. The PS3 has been running strong for the last 3 years...

@OP.

The Fat PS3 is not going to blow up as others are saying. chances are very less. and also most were for the 60GB ones. 80GB ones had very less issues.

Saying this coz been seeing the same in lot of threads.

Although i would suggest u to look for other options before taking plunge.

^Agree with the above post. I have an 80GB PS3 and *touchwood* it is working fine till date without any issues whatsoever. The 80GB phats were less prone to the YLODs compared to the 60GB models. The slim PS3 OTOH are completely free from the YLOD and till date, I haven't heard of a single slim console go YLOD anywhere. So reliability wise both the revised editions of the consoles are built to last. The PS3 has plenty of exclusive titles. The X360 unfortunately has a handful of exclusive titles. Both the consoles can now be modded with some restrictions ofc which is not a subject for discussion ATM.

It appears your most liked genres in gaming is limited to flight sims, racing and some 3rd person action-adventure titles. I'd recommend a X360 Jasper and getting it modded. You will miss out on some exclusives from the PS3 but the games from your most liked genre would definitely be ported to the X360 so you do not lose much.

That'd be my 2 cents. :)

I don't think there are any real flight sim's on the consoles. If you can play it with the regular controller it is an arcade style flying game than a flight sim.
