Advice Needed on Floorstanders or bookshelf Speakers

I am at the moment planning on putting up a HT in my Living Room , I've got an Denon 2106 which I will use in the interim period till I can afford to upgrade to something newer

I have a friend who owns a AV shop and he can procure for me good used Wharfedale Speakers at half the retail price

I presently have my sights on either the Wharfedale Diamond 9.2 or 9.6 are both are available at a excellent price.
My Room measures 11 feet Width x 21 feet length x 9 feet high
Although I would be sitting exactly 17 feet away from the speakers

Would the 9.6 floorstanders be an overkill for my room size ? or would it be appropriate ?
I am planning on using the 9DFS as surrounds and 9cm as center

So considering the size of my room the 9.6 as fronts or 9.2, The 9.5 is not available at all
I am definitely considering a sub at a later stage when i save up some green

50% music x 50% movies
My choice of music is Classic Rock (Nazareth, Mark Knopfler, Scorpions, Chris Rea, Bob Seger etc etc) the occasional instrumental and very rarely probably 10% of the time Techno and Hip Hop.
I listen to music loud but not deafening loud

I definitely need inputs before I dip into my bank balance.
 
The wharfedales are nothing great. If you friend can source wharfedale, he should be able to source quads too. I'd suggest a Quad 11L or 12L with a good pair of stands. It'll sound far better than the boomy floorstanders that the Diamond series has.
 
Yes I totally agree with you , After auditioning the wharfy's as well as the Quad's I did prefer the Quad's However these damn things are just not available used. Looks like noone wants to part with it.

So the next best option was the Wharfy's considering the price point and VFM.

Only hitch is, in my 1980 cubic feet listening area, Should I go in for the 9.2's or 9.6.

I dont want the 9.6 to be an overkill at the same point I dont want the 9.2's to be inadequate,

Wharf 9.6 is NOT boomy.

OP: Have you actually auditioned the speakers?

Keep in mind that bookshelf speakers work best when having firm and heavy speaker stands (5-10K).

When that happens, then they have better mid-range and high-range than similarly priced floor-standers.

However, you cannot beat the bass of the floor standers.

You weight your options - how much you wish to spend, and which end you prefer.

I had same options 2 years back.

Did A/B comparison of Wharf 9.2 and Quad 11L2.

Got Quad 11L2 because of better mid-range.

Wharf 9.6 was quite similar to Quad 11L2 (similar mid-range), but with massive bass.

I figured that bass is not really what I want, (and If I want I can have sub-woofer later).

Plus the Quad 11L2 was less costly than Wharf 9.6

But after setting it up - I realized that I require speaker stand now.

So you must add the price of stands also in order to compare.

In any case my room is small - so I don't require large speakers - which may actually overwhelm the room.

However, today, if you ask me, I would go for Wharf 9.6.

If your room is small - you keep the volume low.

Yes I did audition both, and after reading your post I am definitely going in for the 9.6.

I kiinda had a feeling that if I did go in for the 9.2 I might like it initially and then probably after a year would want to upgrade.

Whereas the 9.6 I should be content for a couple.

I did factor in the price of the stands and the 9,2 is working out to be a tad bit more expensive than the 9.6

Considering my room by Indian standards is fairly large 11ftx21ft. the 9,2's could become overwhelmed at higher volumes

yes the room measures 11 x 21 however considering the depth of the speakers and distance from the back wall etc i would be sitting 17 feet away from the speakers
