Advice on Entry level SLR

No Canon (eos) body have inbuilt motor. Only some Nikon's have it its an old feature of cams.

Hmm. Guess what, I was wrong. Every Canon lens after 1987 has inbuilt focus motors, and will focus with all EOS bodies. Canon switched to the EF mount and cut off support for older mounts in 1987. Nikon kept support for older F mounts and also released bodies without autofocus motors like the D5100. These bodies will not autofocus with old Nikon lenses which do not have in built focus motors, but I don't think you will come across those lenses anyways.

So, this point is moot for new DSLR users. Only seasoned people who might own a lot of old lenses might find D5100 lacking.

The thing i want to say is , if one is dependent on AF on a DSLR, then one should not buy a DSLR in the first place.

Most of the people believe that canon bodies have in built motor but fact is that Canon bodies doesn't have motors inbuilt, instead they have focusing motor in lens (EF and EFS lens) , just check with Google .
Old generation Nikons dint have motor in lens so to focus they depend on motor on camera body . New gen Nikon lens have high speed motors built into the lens , so now Nikon is omitting the motors on low end bodies to reduce cost . Old gen lens like AF S 50mm 1.8D( which costs 6K) wont focus on D5100. You have to go for AF 50mm 1.8 G( 13K) lens to get AF .

Yup. Since this would be my first DSLR and I have no lens from before, I wont be at much loss. I would probably be losing out on AF 50mm 1.8D which is a steal at 6K.

Also , 1.8G is a much better lens than 1.8D. There are many differences between them apart from the auto focus motor.

I have nearly zeroed in on Nikon D5200 over the 5100. Will take the final call in a day or so.

@rads I know the autofocus will be removed but starting out it is useful to get the hang of DSLR.

People debates long about the AF capability of DSLRs , number AF points , type of AF points etc , AF is a must for normal shooting, you cant live with out AF unless you are a macro specialist or HD film maker (where the AF of canons and Nikons are not mature enough). i heard Nikons have better AF capabilities comparing to the similar priced canon models .
don't worry to much about the cam models go for the reasonable good model. Any way you will have the urge to upgrade within weeks after buying any entry level cam . And cam bodies go obsolete within two to three years . if you are a beginner its best to go for a cheep dslr and then upgrade as you progress , get a d3100 or 1100d buy some lens after an year if you believe you are passionate about this go for the upgrade like a D7100 or 7D :) .

Congrtaz, I believe it was a better choice than 600D. It will take time to get used to. Shoot in RAW, and get a class 10 8-16gb SD card.

That really depends on your shooting style. If you are going to use it for the occasional portraits and maybe a trip or two, 16 GB would be more than enough. However if you really get into your camera and learn all its tricks, you will find yourself shooting more and more, and then you can quickly burn through your 16 gigs. RAW files are big, so if you are planning to use your camera quite frequently and/or take a lot of videos, get a 32 GB card.

Thanks for the advice mate.

Are you sure they will support 1080p videos ? How long are you able to record the video ?

Yes, definitely. I haven't tried to max out the length yet, but I have recorded 3-5 mins video in full HD 1080p. The max D5200 can do is 20 min in 24p, 30 min in 30p.

Guys, i'm in a similar soup in which the OP was when started the thread- confused between the 600D and the D5100.

But unlike the OP i will not get the D5100 since it is out of my budget. I had almost zeroed down on the Nikon but a couple of friends with the 1100D confused me.

This is for my sister, do let me know. Thanks.

Yeah, that was a typo. Meant the D5200.

You mean in terms that they are giving a Mem card, lens cleaner and a tripod with the camera? But wont that be a flipkart offer and not something out of the box from Canon? So in effect do i get this advantage if i buy it from ebay/ tradus?

Out of the box they offer the bag and 4Gb card. Tripod and Lens cleaner are from FK.

In ebay you can get the price down to around 31K.
