Hey guys,

My faithful APC BackUPS 500VA has gone kaput, so i have to get a new UPS.

I searched around and found this Numeric 600VA UPS with software monitoring software. It costs just ~1.7K with 2 years warranty. Is Numeric good service wise?

Also, i found the 800VA Microtek(2.6K) and 650VA APC(3K).
I don't think there would be much of a difference between the backup times, so just wanted to know which one would be good warranty and service wise.

My last APC UPS went bad just after 2 years were over...:@

So, thinking of buying a Numeric UPS for the price of half of a single APC UPS, so that even it goes bad i can buy a new one. :ohyeah:

Hard to believe !

I always recommended people to get an APC ups and it still remains faithful to them..

Btw,if your not interested in getting an APC,get the microtek one...
 
ppl suggest a UPS for my config:

c2d e8400,x48,4870,a cpl of hard disks,cdwriter and a dell 24 incher(will soon buy),5-6cooling fans.....didnt want to create another thred just for this purpose..plz advice APC 850VA wud suffice or do i require a 1KVA.......10-15 mins backup to shut down the PC is enuff for me

What do u mean by "APC UPS went bad"?
Is it not giving enough backup time or is it not even getting switched on?

...i think its just a battery issue. Old batteries or something...

How old is the APC, going kaput like that is not what APC is know for.

A new battery will only cost 1000/- odd and your APC will be as good as new.
 
The battery is fine, gives a backup of nearly 10minutes or so. But throughout the day, the UPS just switches off giving a long beep. I switch it off and then on again and it works fine till its mood goes off and switches off again...:P
 
I had APC 500va UPS, it worked for 3.5 years then gone, I went to APC service center, to change the battery, but they checked it and said that the circuit board has also got corrupted. Is that possible? :crutch:
They said that due to overload it may have gone corrupted, but the same UPS I have been using for 3yrs on the same rig, how can tht be.^o
If I repair it would now cost me round 2.6K+.

They however said that it had given good service and i need to change. They said its better I go for new APC UPS then repair it at that cost. They recommended 650VA APC UPS.
I am looking for new alternative, since I would get new GPU,CPU. APC will prove to be costly if go for more VA. :fatigue:

Guys, i cam home today and switched on ma UPS and started the system and there was some blast inside the UPS, it started with the long beep and smoke came out. I seriously don't know what went wrong.

I checked the UPS manual and saw that RED light is for overload. So, dat means it was overloaded. But how was it not since last so many days while i was using it?

BTW, how much Watts should my new UPS have to avoid these overloads? Would APC 650VA be sufficient?

Currently running rig directly on power widout UPS. Hope it won't spoil my rig.

Well u can calculate that urself. :)

First calculate the total Watt that ur rig consumes. Here is the Link1
Note the total Watt.

Then go the Link2
Here put the Watt value in computer load and add ur monitor watt power and calculate. U get the Va requirement for ur UPS.

NB: A average 19''LCD consumes 18W

The second link mentioned above gives a minimum of 550VA and recommends 750VA.

So, is it really required to go for 750VA coz APC would be very costly. Won't the APC 650VA suffice?

Guys, who have better rigs with Quad and all, is anyone using APC 650VA or everyone's using a higher capacity UPS?
 
^^Not related exactly to ur situation, but I've tried 5/6 diff 1kv UPSes but none of them have worked consistently. 2 diff Leibert iTons worked once in a while, a generic one just shut down on a power cut and right now on a El Nova which fails if the GPU is running at full steam :P!

But I suppose this is happening because of the sine wave thingy with Corsair PSUs. In the process of getting a APC Smart 1kv or nearabouts to check that theory out :)
 
To your original query, yes numeric is pretty decent. But APC is the obvious choice. If thats out of budget, then numeric comes number two in my list.
 
So, if i get the APC 650VA UPS, it mite also fail to work or just overload?

Is it necessary to get a SMART UPS only? Can't i go for a normal UPS?
Now, this Corsair PSU thingy is proving costly...:(

Load handling wise, are the APC 650VA and any 800VA UPS different or since APC is more efficient or something both would be the same?

Corsair VX450W PSU
17" CRT 70 W
Sony Mini HIFI 400W PMPO System approx 40 W RMS

all on
Powercom 1KVA ups.

works fine. I even checked it with friend's 9800 GT/512 DDR3 gfx card. It worked.

Have U checked the value of first one with maximum load. What did it showed? ;)
With APC 650va UPS it will not fail, but in full load it may since u have minimum load of 550va. If APC 800va or 1Kva is costly for u then u can go for microtek 1KVA at 3600 :)
 
At full load and 20% capacitor aging it reaches 499W and without the aging its 416W at full load.
Not sure about the aging thingy.

So, will APC 650VA won't work? 800VA is outta my reach. Is it ok to go for Microtek 800VA? Or is the 1KVA necessary?
 
You know Naga thats the same condition here. :'( It is easy to get the configuration and get the rig, but the trouble comes with selecting UPS

Different people are suggesting different UPS,few are too much loyal to some brand and keep suggesting on it. Those who have bucks in hand try out testing them ultimately reaching to the like one.
Now selecting the right UPS with SMPS that supports a rig has become a more of a headache. I am requesting for Big guies in forum to come up with a ultimate thread that gives a detail solution of compatibility with price. By detail I mean don't go on teaching all those detail knowledge about the science stuff. Well few people do care how it works inside, we are more interested in the compatibility and pricing "The Best that suits a particular Rig" :crutch:
