All correct

Elon Musk talks like a free speech absolutist

Is free speech absolutist in the US? No, it is not. There are very clear & justifiable limits.

So why then does every discussion in India about this subject throw in this 'absolutist' term. For over ten years I've seen this word crop up by anchors or commentators as some bogus counter to more liberal speech laws. Clearly they don't get it at all.

USG cannot lock you up because you offended someone or a community. You may have to relocate or go into hiding but the government won't touch you. That is the point.

But here anyone can ask the government to lock you up because you offended their sensiblities.

This is a low cost way to keep the peace. Drama is kept to a minimum. So law & order precedes freedom of speech.
