RIO DE JANEIRO – How does a commercial airplane just disappear in the middle of a flight?

It’s the question of the morning as an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris has vanished over the Atlantic.

Air France Flight 447 took off from Rio at 7:00 p.m. local time Sunday night carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members, but Brazil’s Air Force says that the Airbus A330 passenger plane disappeared near the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, a 7-square mile island about 186 miles northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal.

The last contact with the plane was at 10:36 p.m. Brazil time.

WTF.How can a complete plane disappear ??

Well, the plane was apparently struck by lightning which caused an electrical malfunction somewhere inside.

It's still unimaginable how a modern Airbus A330 can just disappear like that. I think part of the problem lies with the fact that Brazil's advanced radar system that was installed about 10 years ago doesn't extend beyond 150 nautical miles off their coast, so airplanes are mostly on their own from that point until cape verde on the western shoreline of Africa. Pilots are supposed to send an acknowledgement code every 45-50 minutes that tells the ATC that the airplane is on the right path but this guy didn't and that's what sent everyone into panic.

it hit a lot of turbulence apparently. But then I'm really surprised, considering its a 4 year old A330 and these planes can take a bit of a hit.

Sad stuff.....

it also can be an internal technical error,..

Air France said that before the jet disappeared, it had sent the airline a signal reporting an electrical short circuit.

Borloo, the second most senior figure in the Cabinet, told the nation that the jet would have just run out of fuel. "By now it would be beyond its kerosene reserves so unfortunately we must envisage the most tragic scenario".
