Air India barred 19 students from boarding its flight to the USA on the grounds that the two universities in which they had secured admission are under “scrutiny” by American authorities.

The national carrier asked its staff to not allow the 19 students to board its flight to San Francisco at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Monday night.

The students have taken admission at two San Francisco-based varsities that are currently under US government scanner, an Air India official said.

“In the past, we have witnessed that students who secured admission in those institutions have been deported to India as soon as they land there. To avoid embarrassment to them and save their money, we prevented them from boarding the flight,” the official said on Tuesday.

The government-run airline is refunding the entire ticket cost to these students, the official added.

In a statement, Air India said they had on December 19 received a communication from the US Customs and Border Protection Agency that the two universities were under scrutiny and students who arrived in San Francisco were not allowed to enter the US and deported back to India.

“So far, 14 students who travelled on Air India flights to San Francisco have been deported. Students travel on a one-way ticket to the US and, in the event of deportation, incur huge expenditure to buy a ticket back to India on first available service. Further, seats are often not available on any airlines to travel back,” the statement said.

Considering the situation, students booked for travel to take admission to these universities are not being accepted on Air India flights, it further said.

The national carrier will start accepting students travelling to the US to join the two universities at no additional cost as soon as clearance is received from Air India’s US office for their travel, it added.

Meanwhile, one of the universities in question said on its website that “absolutely false” reports are being disseminated by certain media outlets and other groups that the institute has been blacklisted by the US government.

When contacted, an immigration official at the airport said that clearance for boarding a flight has to be given by the airline concerned through the issuance of boarding pass.

“The students were not issued boarding passes. It is the airline’s responsibility to clear passengers. We have nothing to do with the issue,” he said.

US Consulate officials said they are trying to gather information on the episode.

- What authority does AI has to stop its passengers who have Visa and admission letters.
- How did US consulate approve i20 if those universities were under scrutiny by US govt?

Visa for another country is a privilege that can be denied for any reason and at any point of time. You can be denied entry into the country at the discretion of immigration officials even if you have a valid Visa and have already traveled to the country. Holding a valid Visa does not automatically entitle you to entry or continued stay. Its just a mandatory prerequisite.

Student visas are issued for education purposes and have very stringent rules associated with them. If the institution comes under scrutiny, that is enough reason to deny entry to the enrolled students. These are often abused and most particularly by countries like India. There have been sham educational institutions run by Indians in US and UK often in collaboration with locals those existence is solely to get people student visas who can go there to take up jobs which can range form working in some factories run by these very people to prostitution. Both US and UK have been regularly identifying such sham outfits and purging them. Obviously the people involved would be deported and anybody else trying to get in would also be denied.

Secondly, Airline can refuse to sell you a ticket or even after you buy a ticket, the airport staff can deny you entry into their planes. Buying a ticket is a prerequisite, but it does not grant you the right to board a plane. Entry into air planes or ships is a privilege afforded to you at the discretion of the captain (pilot) and his support staff. The captain (pilot) also has authority over everybody (staff, passengers) as long as they are on board his vehicle and at his discretion can order anybody out at any pit stops or after an emergency landing. You can sue the business part of the airline if you think you were dealt with unfairly for deficiency in service, but you cannot argue with the staff or pilot at the airport.

To be honest, Air India is doing a good thing by denying them travel rather than let them travel only for them to be deported back.

Apparently, Few guys couldn't answer to the Immigration officials (Poor English/understanding) and they sent them back. AI learning this, decided not to send further guys to that university.

Good Job Air India.

Those who cannot speak english, Should be deported back.

I know a friend from my college days who went for Visa approval to the US Consulate. Pretty poor in English.. When the guy there asked the profession of his Father .. Told them he does "Money laundering"

Should have done the same thing in US, He would have been in Jail.

Etihad now..

Etihad Airways also barred another batch of 20 students from boarding a flight to the US on Tuesday. The students who arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) Tuesday evening were shocked to learn that their tickets have been cancelled. Further, the Airlines also reportedly demanded Rs 14,000 from the students as cancellation charges.

There are typical people here trying to get a foreign degree just for better dowry and hoping to get super super high paying jobs or probably settle there itself.

Nothing to do with Religion or stuff, I checked that student list majority of them are hindu names. Liked i said if you check data of US students from India most of them would be from Telugu states. No Shit!

As I said before, there are a lot of institutions being setup in US/UK by Indians/Chinese etc for various shady reasons.

In this case, these institutions in question seem to be just diploma mills for Andhra students just looking at the surface of it and have caught the attention of the authorities. What else is going on would soon be found out.

AI also needs to be commended as in the airline refunded the entire ticket cost and has further assured those individuals that, once these issues are sorted out, they can travel again paying the same cost as earlier with no additional charges.

Better being grounded from flying than spending a night or two locked up in a foreign country!

Due to the fact that there were some new SVU students being removed or deported back to India because they were not able to answer the questions adequately to the satisfaction of the inspectors at the port of entry, there were rumors reported by the media in India stating that SVU is being targeted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In reality, CBP is just implementing stricter screening security measures, which are not specific to SVU students, but to all international students entering the U.S. International students must understand that F-1 VISA can only be used for studying in the U.S. and cannot be used for any other purpose. In addition, international students must have the supporting financial documentation to prove that they have sufficient money to pay for their tuitions and living expenses. If for any reason, students fail to provide legitimate proof or correct answers to immigration officials, entries at the airport will be virtually impossible or made a lot more difficult.

At SVU, F-1 students are required to attend classes full-time. Physical attendance is mandatory and it is clearly stated in our Student Handbook online. Working off-campus without an approved Employment Authorization Document (EAD Card) on an F-1 VISA is NOT ALLOWED, illegal and is strictly prohibited.

Silicon Valley University welcomes students from all around the world, but students need to observe all legal requirements as listed below:

1. No Employment in the U.S.: Students cannot work in the U.S. without first getting authorization from the USCIS.

2. No Immigrant Intent: At the time of entry into the U.S., students must maintain a non-immigrant intent to return to their home country after studies have been completed.

3. Sufficient Financial Support: Need to show sufficient financial ability to pay for education and living expenses while in the U.S. for studies.

4. Must attend sponsoring institution: At time of entry, students must be attending the sponsoring institution through which the visa was granted.

Immigration officers at the port of entry will be asking questions of students that probe into these requirements listed above as well as security-related or health-related questions. We do not welcome those who intend to abuse their F-1 VISAs and have other intentions besides studying in our university. For those students whose intentions are not to truly study in the U.S., please do not bother to apply for admission to our university. It will be a waste of your time and money, create significant problems for our university, and affect the legitimate status of current SVU students.

At least the university's involved have put up a notice on their front page.

I am not sure how much of these students story is true. I am disinclined to believe the students account outright though as some of it may be concocted. (like maybe some of the students were drunk which prompted the officers to ask them about it). Indians are used to doing dubious things for getting their VISA's like producing fake documentation and lying through their teeth. Just look at the H1B shams going on all over the country.

Still If their account is true, then that is definitely not the way things need to be handled even if they are ineligible for entry.

And you have a problem with this? Air India may not be the best airline or even reliable for that matter but as someone already said an airline can even refuse you tickets. The way you posted that (to be more specific boldened the name) you made it sound like you are targetting Air India for doing their job. If you still want to simply get another airline's. If the passengers-to-be were not refunded then thats another thing for the media to go hoolaboola over it but they have been refunded. Not sure why anyone would have a problem with this.

What I gathered from various sources is this. After several students going to these two schools got detained and deported, Air India mistakenly believed that these universities were under scrutiny or blacklisted and decided to save other students headed for these schools the trouble.

The reason many of these students were denied entry was because their bank statements (which served as proof that they have enough funds to complete the full course without taking up jobs) were either found to be doctored or insufficient in other respects. Further, they possibly did not answer the questions properly with regard to showing their intent to return to India after the course was over.

I mean, was he really serious? He traveled to US with $1 USD and few cents in US currencies and Rupees 240 in Indian currencies and answer as such at immigration and then these people are questioning why they were deported back.

The deported students even staged a protest outside Air India office. Ignorance much?

Apparently some of these students were given the option of signing a voluntary withdrawal from the university so that their passport is not blacklisted as in the case of official deportation. That is what the latest students sent back were talking about. It looks that the immigration officials were actually doing a favor so that their passports are not tarnished.
