Hi.

I just found out that Airtel now offers a 2Mbps unlimited broadband connection for just Rs. 3,000 per month.

This sounds like it’s too good to be true. Is there any fair usage policy involved? The website doesn’t mention it anywhere.

Wow, is India’s broadband situation really, finally, changing after all?

I am sorry but are you a billionaire? How can it be just Rs.3k and too good to be true thing! Had it been 1.5k then it's alright :)

Do you really need to be a billionaire in order to spend Rs. 3,000 per month for what essentially constitutes the bread and butter of your life? Anything below Rs. 5,000 per month for a truly unlimited high-speed broadband connection would be a steal for me.

I’ve now learned that this plan also has the crazy-ass FUP nonsense attached to it, so it’s not nearly as attractive anymore. But if they truly were offering 2Mbps unlimited for just 3K, oh man, I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. Heck, I’d say that price would’ve been a thousand bucks too low!

Internet access is far more important for me than money (up to reasonable limits).

(Of course, I’m a writer and make money off the Internet, so my situation is a little different from the average broadband subscriber. For me, it’s more of an investment than anything else.)

OK, so let me get this straight:

They have a 2Mbps unlimited plan for 3K with an FUP that kicks in at 100GB and makes the connection useless (256Kbps = crap) and they have a 16Mbps plan at 5K that has a usage limit of 100GB.

Why the hell would anyone go for the 2Mbps plan then? Airtel is freakin’ stupid!

(Yes, I know it’s 2K more expensive but you’re also getting an eight times faster connection. Isn’t that alone worth the extra price?)

it doesn't make the connection useless... it cuts the speed by half so you'll get 1mbps after you cross 100 gigs... which isn't too bad at all. sure it's not as good as no FUP but yea.

i might upgrade to the 2mbit or 16mbit plan soon, depending on how much money i make in the next few months. currently paying 1699 for 1mbps.

oh... the 16mbps plan being only 2k more expensive than the 2mbps plan is not as stupid as it looks from their point of view. the percentage of users on the 2mbps plan at 3k a month is already very low. let us say a 100 out of every 1000 people opt for it. now, the number of people out of that 100 who would be willing to pay another 2k a month for faster internet would be about 5 to 10 (rich people or business users). pricing the 16mbps plan at 5k is not going to hurt the sales of the 2mbps plan in a significant way.

Oh, that I can get onboard with. Are you sure it only reduces the speed to 1Mbps and doesn’t drag it all the way down to the slums (256Kbps)? Oh, man, it would be the ideal plan for me then.

i'm almost certain. as i said, i'm on the 1mbit plan which gets cut down to 512kbps when i hit the FUP limit of 100gb a month (something which i've never done so far :P i don't download much. i just require speed when i'm at the computer). all other plans are cut down to half their speeds as well... i don't see why it should be any different for the 2mbps plan but it doesn't hurt to check with them.

oh and are you sure about a 16mbps unlimited plan with a 100gb FUP for Rs.5000? i've only seen a 50 gig limit plan. got a link? i just might take it up.

Man, I would’ve subscribed to it before posting here if such a plan had been available. The 16Mbps plan is simply limited to 100GB—no fancy unlimited FUPs involved here. So, yeah, the 2Mbps sounds much better in comparison to it now.

And thanks for the info. I’ll call them up first thing tomorrow.

The FUP is not being enforced in all places either. The major cities have it, as for the rest, its being enforced depending on the number of subscribers I think. I don't think my place has it on any of the plans yet. I was on 1mpbs earlier and was never hit by the FUP limit. Now I have moved to the 2mbps plan, let me see what happens.

I live in Noida. I don’t think they have implemented it in Delhi/NCR yet, but I bet they soon will.

No offense, but since when a writer needs a 2mbps connection for work? The only way you will need such a connection is if you are a video blogger and that too blogging in HD video!

that's still OK for me. i don't download that much in a month.

i don't do any of that online and i still don't say no to higher speed. i'm a film maker and soon to be video game producer by profession but i don't really use my home connection for any of that at all. i'm just super impatient. as long as the plan is within my affordability, i always upgrade when a faster one comes out.

That question was for OP

Maybe so but his answer is almost exactly what mine would’ve been as well, if he hadn’t said it already.

Strictly speaking, I guess you could say I could even work on dial-up. But the faster the connection, the easier, smoother, and faster it is. I regularly have to do video chats, download stuff from iTunes (for work, not fun), surf all day long, connect to a VPN, etc.—so, basically, I can use as much speed as I can get and make do with as little as possible as well. Also, I download stuff from the Internet (for fun, not work) like a crazed maniac with his pants on fire! So that’s another aspect to it.

By God’s grace, I make a pretty decent amount from my writing each month and, frankly, paying Rs. 3,000 per month for an Internet connection would actually be one of my cheaper tech-related expenses. So it’s all cool.

And don’t worry, it wasn’t an offensive question.

2mbps for 3k is still too expensive (put aside people with jobs online).

I get 20mbps unlm here for 60$...Rs.3000 :/

i know but i took the liberty to answer for him as i can relate to his need for higher speeds.

@Params7... comparing indian pricing to US pricing isn't a good idea at all. so you get cheaper internet. we have cheaper phone plans over here :) you win some, you lose some.

different markets shouldn't be compared. (especially since the culture and mentality of the user base is so different... 75% of the people in india would still say OK to a 64kbps connection labeled as broadband because they don't know any better)
