Higher speed is something we all went, heck for the three weeks my 256k MTNL unlimited connection was working at 1.8mbps, I was really delighted. Though after couple of weeks of downloading, I was kind of tired of it all as I had seen pretty much all the movies I wanted :D

Of course work remains pretty much the same as ever (I run websites for living) with little or no impact thanks to speed.

^^ :) ditto happened with me!

My 128k airtel was running on 3Mbps for 2 months :P The speed got boring after 1 week :|

Hi.

I just found out that Airtel now offers a 2Mbps unlimited broadband connection for just Rs. 3,000 per month.

This sounds like it’s too good to be true. Is there any fair usage policy involved? The website doesn’t mention it anywhere.

Wow, is India’s broadband situation really, finally, changing after all?

TP: 3k per month isnt cheap.. You can buy a Car through 3-year finance with that money!!! :P

@Op: (2k per month for 2Mbps connection can be considered to be appropriate)

u can instead go for 1299 512kpbs and night 1mbps..
thats what i have, as said above the trill of faster speed dies soon after u download few movies.

Do you really need to be a billionaire in order to spend Rs. 3,000 per month for what essentially constitutes the bread and butter of your life? Anything below Rs. 5,000 per month for a truly unlimited high-speed broadband connection would be a steal for me.

It seems for you it isn't much & for that matter anybody with such deep pockets. No offence mate, but it still is out of reach for max consumers. I would spend not Re1 more than 1k on bb, like I am now & spend that extra 2k on mutual funds* every month.

In one of the posts, someone gave an example that "100 out 1000 must be using 2mbps UL", we are talking about the consumer bb, we have 2% such connections and not 10%.

*Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risk, please read the offer document carefully before investing.

LOL! Why is everyone assuming that I’ve never used fast broadband and don’t know what it’s like? I’ve been to San Francisco to cover the Macworld Expo and I had access to a 40Mbps unlimited connection over there for a whole month. I neither get bored (the sheer idea is laughable) of it nor ran out of content to download. I’m a hoarder with more terabytes of storage space than bones in my body, so no amount of content is enough for me. :p

I am getting 2 Mbps unlimited for 999 + Taxes through MTNL triband for last few months, infact from the time i got my connection (touchwood) :ohyeah:

All thanks to their mistake. Hope they never correct it :ohyeah:

Really??? you have more than 206TB of Space????? :O :O :O

Well, you get the drift, don’t you? Exaggeration is a form of expression. I have about 10TB of storage space in total, spread across two Macs, a Time Capsule, one external HDD, and a Drobo. Only 5TB is usable though because the other half acts as backup for the first half.

2mbps @ 3000 is way too expensive.(BSNL 3G Unlimited costs 3000 per month!!!!)

If u need Unlimited connection, go for BSNL UL 750,It's got good speed for browsing and occasional downloading.

Otherwise i would say BSNL Night UL 500 is best.Allows one to download 100 Gb per month.100 Gb per month is very good for a normal user.

Anyway, no chance of getting airtel while BSNL/MTNL is out there.

@Params7... comparing indian pricing to US pricing isn't a good idea at all. so you get cheaper internet. we have cheaper phone plans over here :) you win some, you lose some.

different markets shouldn't be compared. (especially since the culture and mentality of the user base is so different... 75% of the people in india would still say OK to a 64kbps connection labeled as broadband because they don't know any better)
Ah, it’s refreshing to see people who know what they are talking about.

OK, maybe it is for some people. I agree with this.

But this is where it starts getting weird. How can you even compare a 256Kbps unlimited connection to a 2Mbps unlimited connection? If 256Kbps costs Rs. 750, 2Mbps ought to cost Rs. 6,000 per month. And, in fact, MTNL does charge you Rs. 4,000 per month for a 1Mbps connection and a honkin’ Rs. 8,000 for a 2Mbps unlimited connection. Plus, Airtel offers much faster and more consistent speeds, has no billing issues, and boasts of one of the most accomplished customer care infrastructures in this country. BSNL is not better than Airtel. No way. (And I say this as someone who’s currently subscribed to both a BSNL as well as an Airtel connection.)

As someone who’s currently on BSNL’s Home 1000 plan (and have tried all sorts of other plans like Home 250, Home 500, Home 750 UL, Home 1350 UL, and Home 1800), I vehemently disagree. The 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM download window is too weirdly placed and I absolutely hate it. Of course, you can use scheduling and all that to download during that window but it doesn’t give you nearly the same amount of flexibility as a truly unlimited connection does. Plus, if you ever forget to disconnect and reconnect your connection after and before 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM respectively, you end up with a huge phone bill. It’s a messed up system and I’m dying to give up my BSNL connection (but don’t have any other option in my hometown Siliguri because Airtel isn’t available here).

That’s your prerogative but I can unequivocally state that Airtel is way, way better than BSNL. They’re not even in the same league. While I applaud BSNL’s initial initiative to bring high speed broadband to India at affordable prices, which is what prompted private companies like Airtel to follow suit, they’re now just resting on their laurels. Their plans are outdated, the speeds are much worse than Airtel’s, customer care is almost nonexistent, and the prices (though they start out low) are actually too high for heavy users.

I absolutely loathe Airtel’s FUP bullshit and if there was an India-wide campaign against it or a joint class action lawsuit, I would be one of the first people to put my initials on the dotted line. But no one can deny that they are currently the fastest, most reliable broadband service in India and have some of the best tariff plans in the country.

while i don't think 3k for 2mbps unlimited is cheap... i will probably get it too. now if they were giving out 16mbps unlimited for 3k, i'd have no second thoughts.

i don't leech that much but my usage pattern is such that when i do have to download a large file, i usually require it very quickly. uncompressed 2gig video files aren't fun to download on a 1mbit connection.
