But this is where it starts getting weird. How can you even compare a 256Kbps unlimited connection to a 2Mbps unlimited connection? If 256Kbps costs Rs. 750, 2Mbps ought to cost Rs. 6,000 per month. And, in fact, MTNL does charge you Rs. 4,000 per month for a 1Mbps connection and a honkin’ Rs. 8,000 for a 2Mbps unlimited connection. Plus, Airtel offers much faster and more consistent speeds, has no billing issues, and boasts of one of the most accomplished customer care infrastructures in this country. BSNL is not better than Airtel. No way. (And I say this as someone who’s currently subscribed to both a BSNL as well as an Airtel connection.)
As someone who’s currently on BSNL’s Home 1000 plan (and have tried all sorts of other plans like Home 250, Home 500, Home 750 UL, Home 1350 UL, and Home 1800), I vehemently disagree. The 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM download window is too weirdly placed and I absolutely hate it. Of course, you can use scheduling and all that to download during that window but it doesn’t give you nearly the same amount of flexibility as a truly unlimited connection does. Plus, if you ever forget to disconnect and reconnect your connection after and before 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM respectively, you end up with a huge phone bill. It’s a messed up system and I’m dying to give up my BSNL connection (but don’t have any other option in my hometown Siliguri because Airtel isn’t available here).
That’s your prerogative but I can unequivocally state that Airtel is way, way better than BSNL. They’re not even in the same league. While I applaud BSNL’s initial initiative to bring high speed broadband to India at affordable prices, which is what prompted private companies like Airtel to follow suit, they’re now just resting on their laurels. Their plans are outdated, the speeds are much worse than Airtel’s, customer care is almost nonexistent, and the prices (though they start out low) are actually too high for heavy users.
I absolutely loathe Airtel’s FUP bullshit and if there was an India-wide campaign against it or a joint class action lawsuit, I would be one of the first people to put my initials on the dotted line. But no one can deny that they are currently the fastest, most reliable broadband service in India and have some of the best tariff plans in the country.

The Photon service may be good but trying to communicate with their customer service department is like talking to a brick wall. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Of course I would. Are you kidding me! I would sign up for it in a heartbeat.ishashank said:now if they do
Rs 5000 for 4 Mbps would you upgrade??? Mathematicshyeah:
When I was reading that, I was wondering where you lived. And then I read Kolkata. Suddenly, it all made sense. West Bengal is the shittiest place in India to live in and the customer care departments of all companies are lacking out here. It’s not just limited to Airtel. And you find BSNL’s service good? Hah! I just fell out of my chair laughing.bs0409 said:From Where did u get that info man.....???
Airtel is total shit as an internet service provider.
Their speeds are not upto the mark and customer service is not that good.
I live in kolkata and here BSNL customer service is quite good and responsive.
I do. A lot of people do, as surprising as it may be for you.bs0409 said:Plus who the hell needs a 2 mbps unlimited connection?
Please check back again what I have written. I said it's not just Rs.3k for ALL! You generalized that and that's what I pointed out. I have NO problem or NO objection whether you can afford it or not!aryayush said:Do you really need to be a billionaire in order to spend Rs. 3,000 per month for what essentially constitutes the bread and butter of your life? Anything below Rs. 5,000 per month for a truly unlimited high-speed broadband connection would be a steal for me.
I’ve now learned that this plan also has the crazy-ass FUP nonsense attached to it, so it’s not nearly as attractive anymore. But if they truly were offering 2Mbps unlimited for just 3K, oh man, I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. Heck, I’d say that price would’ve been a thousand bucks too low!
Internet access is far more important for me than money (up to reasonable limits).
(Of course, I’m a writer and make money off the Internet, so my situation is a little different from the average broadband subscriber. For me, it’s more of an investment than anything else.)
Plus who the hell needs a 2 mbps unlimited connection?
I'm from Bombay. I'll post the results as soon as I get my connection up & running, which would be probably around Sunday.Aphro_EVO said:Hey Ethan, I changed my plan to Explore 1099 too yesterday. Prolly it will be implemented by eod today. Btw, where are you from. Do post your upload speed; am anxious to check mine.
I suppose that would apply to us as well.Aphro_EVO said:Ohh btw the FUP for Explore 1099 is NCR is 75 GB as the cc told me.
aryayush said:Yes, someone else told me that they would give me a 2Mbps unlimited plan for Rs. 2,499 per month as well. I’ll enquire about it when I’m back in Noida on 2 Aug.

BSNL Home 500 or Home 750 UL is enough. 3000 per month just for a broadband connection is just too much expensive.
