but i heard their new photon is good?

anyways i am paying around Rs1900 for 1Mbps unlimited Airtel in Delhi NCR, Rs 3K is not VFM for 2Mbps IMO

Why? Rs. 1,900 x 2 = Rs. 3,800. It’s simple mathematics, really.

The Photon service may be good but trying to communicate with their customer service department is like talking to a brick wall. Your mileage may vary, of course.

OK, maybe it is for some people. I agree with this.

But this is where it starts getting weird. How can you even compare a 256Kbps unlimited connection to a 2Mbps unlimited connection? If 256Kbps costs Rs. 750, 2Mbps ought to cost Rs. 6,000 per month. And, in fact, MTNL does charge you Rs. 4,000 per month for a 1Mbps connection and a honkin’ Rs. 8,000 for a 2Mbps unlimited connection. Plus, Airtel offers much faster and more consistent speeds, has no billing issues, and boasts of one of the most accomplished customer care infrastructures in this country. BSNL is not better than Airtel. No way. (And I say this as someone who’s currently subscribed to both a BSNL as well as an Airtel connection.)

As someone who’s currently on BSNL’s Home 1000 plan (and have tried all sorts of other plans like Home 250, Home 500, Home 750 UL, Home 1350 UL, and Home 1800), I vehemently disagree. The 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM download window is too weirdly placed and I absolutely hate it. Of course, you can use scheduling and all that to download during that window but it doesn’t give you nearly the same amount of flexibility as a truly unlimited connection does. Plus, if you ever forget to disconnect and reconnect your connection after and before 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM respectively, you end up with a huge phone bill. It’s a messed up system and I’m dying to give up my BSNL connection (but don’t have any other option in my hometown Siliguri because Airtel isn’t available here).

That’s your prerogative but I can unequivocally state that Airtel is way, way better than BSNL. They’re not even in the same league. While I applaud BSNL’s initial initiative to bring high speed broadband to India at affordable prices, which is what prompted private companies like Airtel to follow suit, they’re now just resting on their laurels. Their plans are outdated, the speeds are much worse than Airtel’s, customer care is almost nonexistent, and the prices (though they start out low) are actually too high for heavy users.

I absolutely loathe Airtel’s FUP bullshit and if there was an India-wide campaign against it or a joint class action lawsuit, I would be one of the first people to put my initials on the dotted line. But no one can deny that they are currently the fastest, most reliable broadband service in India and have some of the best tariff plans in the country.

From Where did u get that info man.....???
Airtel is total shit as an internet service provider.
Their speeds are not upto the mark and customer service is not that good.
I live in kolkata and here BSNL customer service is quite good and responsive.
Plus who the hell needs a 2 mbps unlimited connection?
BSNL Home 500 or Home 750 UL is enough. 3000 per month just for a broadband connection is just too much expensive.

anything above 1 Mbps is good but what about usage, Mathematics :S

Rs 1900 for 1 Mbps

Rs 3000 for 2 Mbps
now if they do

Rs 5000 for 4 Mbps would you upgrade??? Mathematics:ohyeah:

Usage>>Money>>Mathematics :bleh:

Of course I would. Are you kidding me! I would sign up for it in a heartbeat.

You’re getting twice the usage out of a 2Mbps connection than a 1Mbps one, aren’t you? So you gotta pay for that extra speed. I’m not saying it’s worth it for everyone but it is for me.

When I was reading that, I was wondering where you lived. And then I read Kolkata. Suddenly, it all made sense. West Bengal is the shittiest place in India to live in and the customer care departments of all companies are lacking out here. It’s not just limited to Airtel. And you find BSNL’s service good? Hah! I just fell out of my chair laughing.

Seriously though, consider yourself extremely lucky if BSNL’s service is actually good in your area. I talked to an actual BSNL executive who gave up on her BSNL Internet connection even though it was free for her because of the shitty service. She told me that she couldn’t imagine how much worse it must be for ordinary people when even she was dissatisfied with it. And before you bash on me for ragging on West Bengal, I’ll have you know that I was born here and have lived here my entire life. Still do. So I know what I’m talking about.

I do. A lot of people do, as surprising as it may be for you.

Since I had a month's experience with 2Mbps MTNL unlimited speed (applied for 256Kbps UL plan & plan changed but speed didn't :P) and that made me realize how much we need a 2Mbps plan. I would have got the 2Mbps plan that Airtel is currently offering, if it didn't have that dreaded FUP implemented on it. Their reasoning for FUP implementation is completely hilarious. I can't see any reasoning behind paying for an unlimited download connection & reducing the speeds after a specific download quota is reached. It's downright absurd.

I have currently applied for the Explore 1099 plan. Hope that doesn't get screwed by the FUP. I'm really looking forward to this connection as this is my 3rd ISP. How I wish they would have unlimited Internet connections properly implemented in India! :(

Hey Ethan, I changed my plan to Explore 1099 too yesterday. Prolly it will be implemented by eod today. Btw, where are you from. Do post your upload speed; am anxious to check mine.

+1 to WB being a lousy place to live in - lousiest place i've lived in for sure.

and i am totally jealous now, hoping bsnl matches these plans soon... im on 512k UL meaning it "would" become about 1 mbps, and i would need to think about spending double for 2 mbps...

Do you really need to be a billionaire in order to spend Rs. 3,000 per month for what essentially constitutes the bread and butter of your life? Anything below Rs. 5,000 per month for a truly unlimited high-speed broadband connection would be a steal for me.

I’ve now learned that this plan also has the crazy-ass FUP nonsense attached to it, so it’s not nearly as attractive anymore. But if they truly were offering 2Mbps unlimited for just 3K, oh man, I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. Heck, I’d say that price would’ve been a thousand bucks too low!

Internet access is far more important for me than money (up to reasonable limits).

(Of course, I’m a writer and make money off the Internet, so my situation is a little different from the average broadband subscriber. For me, it’s more of an investment than anything else.)
Please check back again what I have written. I said it's not just Rs.3k for ALL! You generalized that and that's what I pointed out. I have NO problem or NO objection whether you can afford it or not!

What!!! What is 2mbps? I want 200mbps, so that I can d/l a movie in 5-10mins, watch it and delete it. No need for big hard drives :ohyeah:

I'm from Bombay. I'll post the results as soon as I get my connection up & running, which would be probably around Sunday. :)

ahh why are you paying 3k for the2mbps plan? I am on the 2mbps plan in pune and its only 2499. Downloadspeed is around 250-260K Modem has a hard limit of 25XXkbps

Yes, someone else told me that they would give me a 2Mbps unlimited plan for Rs. 2,499 per month as well. I’ll enquire about it when I’m back in Noida on 2 Aug.

Well, some places have it lucky as they are offering the 2mbps/3k per month connection for 2499Rs/month.

Nway, 2 mbps seems tempting especially since i was used to the old 2222Rs /month rate for 1mbps but still pricey!

i've been using airtel for more than 3 years now and i've NEVER had speeds lower than 95% of my theoretical maximum. the longest downtime i've ever had with them is 3 days and this was a one time affair... i seriously can't remember the last time my internet went down. their customer care people don't know what they're talking about but they're at least very prompt in forwarding requests to the concerned people and they call back to check if the issue has been resolved.

about speed requirement, speak for yourself please. i'm considering paying 3k a month for 2mbps. while i'll admit that it is on the pricier side, i won't go so far as to call it ridiculous pricing. if you're satisfied with whatever speeds you're getting with those plans, so be it. why are you questioning other people's needs?

I do agree that BSNL Home 500 is the best budget plan, but that doesn't make up for its crappy customer care. In fact, in Kolkata there isn't even a customer care number. Can you provide one?

However, this Airtel offer is indeed quite pricey if you consider the FUP, which kicks in after 100GB of downloads.
