Airtel broadband vs. Tata Indicom

I've been calling the airtel customer care many times lately, asking them for a new broadband connection, but inspite of the "within 48 hours" promise, nobody has come around for the past few weeks. I really doubt they have their services where I live (university north campus) but they are not directly telling that.

So should I opt for a tata indicom 128kbps unlimited connection instead? Although it doesn't offer the night time 2x speeds of airtel, it seems cheaper (about 630 vs 760 of airtel). Could any airtel/tata indicom users enlighten me about the pro's and con's of either?

I am especially interested in the following -

Port blocking
Any connection downtimes
Speed fluctuations
Using under linux

Any other information/advise would me much appreciated as well. I need to make a quick decision as I do not want to spend another month with sify :cool2:

Regarding Airtel, their double speeds service seems to have been withdrawn w.e.f 1 June, 2007. Read this thread for the same:

http://www.techenclave.com/forums/airtel-speeds-delhi-no-double-speed-91798-4.html

Here r ur queries:

Port blocking: Possible under Airtel with Beetel 220BX modem. You can also use Bridged mode in which all ports are unblocked by default.

Any connection downtimes: Not yet (2 months since i am using Airtel)

Speed fluctuations: Not much

Using under linux: Works on the fly without any configuration in PPPoE mode. However you'll need to do some configuration in bridged mode. But this is true for all broadband services and not just Airtel.

Port blocking as in are ports blocked and you are not able to use them ? if so tata is famous for this, no probs whatsoever under airtel.

connection downtimes and speed fluctuations are rare with artel and more commmon with tata. This depends largely on whether the wires are underground or overhead, if its the latter you will have downtimes for simple reasons like cables getting cut for unknown reasons.

If airtel is not avaliable in your area, i guess you are stuck between a rock & a hard place. You might get more bandiwdth with tata for the same money, but other than that i doubt there will be much diff.

Ouch... no double speeds seems to make the price difference quite noticeable. Anyway thanks for the info there :) yes, from what all I have heard and seen so far, airtel seems to meet my requirements quite well, so mainly I wanted to know, how does tata indicom stand up to it? (it seems I would have to go for that now ...)

Yeah I meant port blocking as in forcibly blocking network connections on a specific port (at the ISP server). Sify is no beginner in that as well, they block default IRC and newsgroup ports, so one needs to change ports in all applications :( to what extent does tata indicom do that? Any feedback from tata users will be much appreciated.

Any connection downtimes: 10 times (2 years since i am using Airtel)

Speed fluctuations: Not at all

Using with XP & Vista in Bridged mode

my friend in delhi is using a tat connection his been working fine , no downtimes for over 6 months now and the connections and torrent speeds have also been constantly good at par with airtel 27 - 32 kbps on 256 unlimited.

if possible, get tata indicom BB from tata teleservices ltd. They provide better service i guess.

make sure u get unlimited connection.

I took a 399/month connection with unlimited download from 8 pm to 8 am and 50 ps / mb during day.

now i am stuck with a 2k bill and am gonna take it to court czu they billed me wrongly.

But the service is excelleing. Torrents and area and everything working and fast too. no downtime in the past 2 months.

Sorry for bumping this thread again, but there's one little thing I wanted to know. The indicom broadband representative said that the router provided would allow only a single PC connection. Is there any option to rent a router with multiple ethernet ports (or a wireless one) at perhaps an additional cost?

biosbhai, thanks for the info there. By the way, is there any site where I can get info about night unlimited plans (if available in delhi), as it does not seem to be present at the main site.

connect router to hub/switch and use

My experience with Tata broadband has been horrible. Moved from BSNL to TATA on the 22nd of May. In the last 3.5 weeks, I have had 8 full days of downtime( 3 days 2 weeks back , and, 5th day running now). Wires are overhead, get cut frequently and therein lies the problem. I really wish I had not moved.

Customer service is pathetic. All they do is tell they have filed a complaint and will get back to me. And the field engineer does not pick up his phone. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Did you get this from tata teleservices as recommended above or a reseller (aka former cable wallah) ?

I called Tata Indicom customer service for new connection and after 7 days i got the reply there in no port free in my area for new connection and they are now only catering to their existing customer...but by the look of it i am not sure they are doing that either..

both Airtel and Tata indicom (due to their non availability) dissapoint me..now iam without internet for one month and that is really bad....and i live in South delhi..talk about technology...

^^ Get the MTNL 256UL plan mate, that is the best u can do rite now...

BTW, no Airtel in your area?

No Airtel..No Tata :( and to add on to that was using MTNL just disconnected coz wanted to shift to Airtel unlimited..:@

LOL...you should have waited to DC the MTNL line till Airtel confirmed to you.

Guess all you can do now is reapply for the MTNL line...

no other alternatives...?

Well you can approach the local cable wallah but their speeds and service usually suck..

Better to approach MTNL and get a new connection...If your landline is still MTNL, it wont be much of a problem
