Just Switche from BSNL BB to Airtel BB 3 days ago.Opted for the 1299 plan(512 in the day and 1mbps in the night).
After the first day, the browsing speed in the evenings and the mornings is very slow. The pages take ages to load.Sometimes the pages dont load but firefoz loads it as 'Done'.
I checked the speed in the beetel test link given in the BB forum. The speed is allright(not the speed I expect). But even at 700 KBps the browsing should be damn fast. But it's not.

The CC person came last evening and meddled around for about 1 hour. Finally he installed DrTCP software and changed the MTU value from 1482 to 1472.The speed was proper again. But after 10 PM the speed sucked a** again!:@

Anyone faced problems like this?

I dont think browser is an issue here.I've been using firefox since years together.Never faced an issue due to a browser.

If that is the case,The problem should be consistent right?

Might I add, the problem especially arrives after 9-ish.

The only good suggestion from all of the crap posts was to try and use OpenDNS.

Please go to Beetel Modem Setup page and use OpenDNS ips for Primary and Second DNS.

Save the settings and reboot the modem.

Please don't disrespect others posts when you really don't know them.

Whereas I didn't recommend opendns for some reasons, that were

a. The latency of OpenDNS is higher than Airtel's dns.. Although openDNS are correct and better but they are US Server based and it takes time <300 ms whereas airtel <20ms.

b. OpenDNS is blocking many of the sites which it thinks is suspicious, it has blocked gmail for me once. as IP's are dynamic and some people are managing it through the account based facility.

Airtel browsing is fantastic here !

I was experiencing the same issue after Airtel bumped up the speeds. Was a DNS issue as Vasishta pointed out. Just switch to some other DNS (I'm using opendns for now)

Think before you post, there are some public forum etiquette's to be kept in mind while expressing your view.

Its not your bedroom that you keep passing judgments and/or conclusions about other people and/or their views.

Normally, I would agree with this statement. However, the man has a point. The very first reply to this thread was some silly fanboy statement. Almost sounds like something I'd expect to see on 4chan or gamefaqs forums.

OP: Like everyone else here as already said, it sounds like a DNS issue. Hope using Google DNS solves your issue.

OT : Have you guys seen the quality of forum dip in the past 3 years, earlier people used to contribute and not just post around what they think it could possibly be. Its a technical forum, please add only if you know about the topic. Helping other is nice but helping them without knowing about the topic yourself doesn't help anyone. And i do apologize for that outburst but i was sick of reading posts which say FF/Opera/IE rulz :|

Btw rahgav noob its smiley here :P ( I am back in CS)

Coming back on the topic.

if changing to Google DNS/ Open DNS doesn't help you then try the ping test as suggested above to the nearest testing location available inside india and report back.

High downloading speed doesn't mean that the latency/ping has to be low.

Hmm.. I'll try to change the DNS and report back. But the 'senior engineer' who visited my house last evening has a different take on it.

1. First he tried many settings and claimed that it's a modem problem.I use a D-link modem which supports upto 10Mbps(forgot the model no.) but it has never given me a problem.

but then when he changed it to his airtel modem, the problem persisted. So he concluded the problem is NOT modem. Also, I pointed out that if the modem 'hangs' as he claimed, there should be no internet at all.How can I have intermittent internet connection or the browsing speed is slow but download speed is good?

2. Then when we were trying to restart the computer, he saw the 'Windows Genuine Advantage' message shown by Microsoft(yes yes..my Win Xp is pirated!). He then claimed "Oh sir.. here is your problem.Microsoft people lately been hacking people's computers to fight piracy. You will have to format your hard drive". Can you believe it?I can believe that there is malware lurking around in my hard drive but MS peeps?

On the same note, I need you guys to confirm something which I have doubt on.Can trojans and malwares slow down the internet or it's connectivity?

By which ways are you downloading *things* ? Torrents ? Download Managers ?

Is the usual Browser download speed ok ?

Yes Malware and Trojans can slowdown your internet considerably, i have suffered it :(

Some malware will continuously try to spread themselves over the network by scanning the network, which does have an effect on your latencies.

Please use HiJack This and post the log, as well run some AV check
