All about global positioning system(GPS)

hi guys, i see many members gets confused with the terms A-GPS(assisted global positioning system), GPS, and network based positioning system. So i will try to clear the things as much as i can.
FIRST OF ALL, what is GPS?

the system by which position of the gps reciever can be defined in terms of LATITUDE, LONGITUDE, AND ALTITUDE.
this task is done by using satellites which are revolving around the earth and this data is publicly available. means everybody who has a gps receiver can know the co-ordinates.

so, now we can see that no cellular network is involved in position system. so if u have a phone which has a gps receiver built in, u can know your co-ordinates (at least..)without the packet data or without the internet connection.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TTFF-(Time To First Fix) is the time how long before you get your location pinpointed. This initial TTFF is often called a “cold startâ€.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now our next term is A-GPS.
so "A" stands here for assisted, so as the name suggests, it assists(helps) in getting a lock to the satellite faster. and it requires data connection to the assistance servers so data charges apply here.

remember, it is always gps with A-gps support. a-gps cannot work without the gps chipset, but gps can still work without a-gps.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
next comes network based positioning system.
it is just the location(co-ordinates) of the tower from where u r receiving ur network(cellular) signal. so it cant be used for turn by turn navigation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now the use of gps information.
suppose u know the co-ordinates of the location, you can easily pinpoint the location on the map. the same way gps works. the gps receiver gets the co-ordinates and it is then pinpointed on the map.
now to pin point the location one need a map in pocket or needs to buy is. so same with the mobile phones, either phone must have the maps stored in, or have to download the map, which will require data connection and data charges apply.

nice informative topic, but practically how good is gps in india?

Satnav provides free gps maps for nokia in india. How accurate is it?

can it create routes from source to destination?

can it re-route if you take a wrong turn?

does it by any chance give traffic information?

well gps is same all over the world but it depends on the maps, garmin and map my india has covered all major cities with detailed maps and i think all the SHs and NHs are there. btw there are google maps, but downside is they are not offline.
garmin and mapmyindia and google maps for moble can create route from source to destination.

garmin and mapmyindia can reroute also.

no detailed traffic information is available.

Many Nokia smartphones which have gps, can use free voice navigation using Ovimaps. At present only few cities are covered for in city detailed map, but road coverage is there for entire India and it is very good. I am using it regularly. Most important it is completely free.

i have a Garmin 76CSX handheld, any idea on where to source maps for Indian cities ?

Both MapMyIndia and Satguide supply Indian maps for Garmin. MMI is cheaper AFAIK. Myself using Ovi/Nokia maps as also Google map with 5230 and find the latter more detailed but without voice navigation.

I recently installed GarminXT on my friends Nokia N78.It works like charm doesn't use A GPS at all .He gets satellite lock even inside house .NZ maps are good not sure about India maps.It even tells which exit i have to take on a motorway/highway.Turn by turn navigation is very very good.
