Hi guys,

I bought a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens roughly 20 days back and I'm already itching for a new lens.

I will be leaving on a trip to singapore and malaysia and somehow I feel that 18-55 kit lens won't be enough.

I'm confused on what lens I would be needing,whether a telephoto (55-300) or a fast prime like AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G / AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G.

My budget is 20k max.

I'm new to dslr's ....plz help me out.

Thanks

Rahul

Depends what you are planning to shoot . There are lot of options under 20k .Especially a little over 20k . Either you can a single amazing lens around ~20-25k like the 70-300 VR or a ultra wide angle . Or else you could get- 55-200 VR + a 35mm/50mm F/1.8 . The 55-200 costs ~11-12k . 50mm costs about 5-kish and 35mm- 11.5k .

The 55-200 + 35mm should cover pretty much most of the shots in your Singapore trip IMO .

Hello Folks,

I have finally decided to take the plunge into the world of DSLR. I have decided to go with a Canon make owing to the availability of cheap lenses. I am confused between the Xsi, t1i and t2i (1000D,ti1 and t2i)

1. How important is IS in a 18-35 mm lens?

2. Is Canon 500D worthy of it's higher price?

3. Any other reason I should consider a t2i apart from the fact that it has better video options? I am not a video buff would at least want an option to capture videos.

Most importantly, Where to buy it from?

I am in Bangalore but can easily source a DSLR from the US. I don't mind refurbished ones as well (quality check standards in US is quite high) Can you suggest me some good deals where I can buy a camera with additional lenses?

Also, I will travelling to Shanghai in September. Do you get better deals there?

Or is it better to buy it in Bangalore gray market if Canon doesn't have international warranty?

Few questions regarding Macro adapters for Nikn 50mm Lens (52 mm diameter)

I tried using an el cheapo macro filter of a friend but it was really bad for PQ and focussing zone was suite small, I could not get satisfying sharpness in any of the photos.

So whats the solution, a reversal adapter is better or extension tube with electronic controls, any links to the products.

iirc faheem got one but he did not reply to my message :P.

^^ I used Faheems setup. Its less than useful on Nikon because Nikon removed metering support for non electronic lenses. So you have to guess the exposure and click the photos.

Using extension tubes is again a pain as the cheap ones do not have any electronics. The electronic extension tubes cost around 7k which is what can get you a used Nikon 60mm f2.8 AF 1:1 macro lens.

So to summarize, Nikon bodies lower than D200/D300 will not meter with non electronic lenses. This includes manual extension tubes (the cheap 800 bucks extension tubes available on ebay), reverse rings (for reversing lenses) or for manual focus lenses like the Nikon 105mm f2.8 AI-S.

As you put on JJM, older Nikon MF lens will work better on a Canon body with adapters rather then the new Nikon bodies :)

Yeah right ! That never happens :P

Anyways I finally got Docs message and replied to it . Posting the reply here as well , just incase anyone else is in a similar dilemma.

I got the reverse ring adapter for some 350 bucks to try with my 50mm as it has aperture control on the lens itself. It turned out to be pretty decent but major problem is focusing distance is very very small . Its like you move a cm here and there and you lose focus .Brendons really good with it but I have a hard time getting decent shots with it :P

Also you need to be very very close to the subject. Basically there are very little subjects you can shoot with it , IMO . You cant get too close to any living creature cause you will scare them off.

I have also used those cheap set of +1 /+2 adapters. There clarity /sharpness was also pretty good but I guess not as good as the reverse ring adapter .Overall they are much easier o use. I would say if you don't want to spend much just get those +1 / +2 set.

Here are some samples from reverse ring adapter.

Now here are some samples from those extension tubes/adapters that I had borrowed from a guy during a shoot.

I got my hands on an extension tube, am going to combine it with a 1:1 native macro lens. I should get ~2-2.1:1 magnification with this.

Hi guys.........I own a Canon 500D and am planning to take a macro lens. Am interested in the Tamron 90mm Macro lens (Canon Mount) which is priced at 21k INR on flipkart ..........My question here Is the Tamron lens compatible on a 500D body and or what can be the pros/cons ?

Yes it will work perfectly. But do note that AF will start to hunt like crazy at close distances. Sharpness wise it will compete with the best out there though the Canon 100mm L lens has better contrast, better build quality, faster AF and a 2 stop IS advantage at close distances (4 stop IS at normal distances). But it costs 30k more. :P

Thanks for the response.......would love to get the Canon 100mm L but its way out of my budget........i'll settle for the Tamron 90mm !

Hi guys, quick question. ANy place I can find older manual lens's in Bangalore for cheap...learning about photography and want to try out some manual lens's. In particular am looking for a manual prime macro and probably a portrait lens.
