Well, it makes sense, but I thought you wouldnt upgrade to the next socket immediately. Besides, x8 varies from x16 only in single gpu setups by a little bit. The gap is larger in multiGPU setups at higher resolutions. Just my $0.02.
^^ I had originally intended to get the latest Enthusiast Platform only (X68) like I did in the past (975X and X48). But this time, there are reasons because of which I need to upgrade soon and the X68 will need more time to come out. Instead of going for the X58, I preferred to go with the P67. If I find something tempting (Better Hex/Octa core for a decent price) in the AMD Bulldozer or the X68 Range and I see value in changing to that, I will appropriately change to that CPU/Motherboard.

As for differences in x8 and x16, I was talking about the Multi GPU situation only. There will obviously be a small difference between x8 + x8 and x16 + x16, but the thing with Multi-GPU is that CPU is often a very major limiting factor and I am willing to bet that I will get considerably better performance on P67 with CPU @ 4.5GHz than I get on X58 with CPU @ 4.0GHz. In addition, Sandy bridge will allow me to upgrade to a better platform without loosing out badly on the resale value as compared to X58.

^They are pretty good. Have had an issue before with the sticks purchased via Newegg, US and got it sorted out quick thanks to the awesome support from their HQ at Taiwan.
thanks a lot

Ok Guy's I placed an order for the i5 2500k today. :) With such a decent price from SMC, there was no reason to consider the 2600k.

Now I need some advice with finalizing the RAM and CPU Cooler. Looks to me like those two things are linked.

My options currently are limited to 1 x 4GB Kits of either GSkill Ripjaws X or Corsair Vengeance. Corsair Vengeance seems to be considered a better choice for the Asus Sandy Bridge boards (especially when populating all 4 slots), but the heat spreaders on these things are too damn tall and can obstruct installation of CPU coolers like Venomous X. Ripjaws X on the other hand are not so tall, but people seem to have run into problems (booting/overclocking/running at rated clocks) with 4 x 4GB configs on Asus boards most particularly Sabertooth P67. However that board is also being considered to be very picky about RAM.

As for CPU cooler, There is the Corsair H70 and Thermalright Venomous X. The first is a liquid cooler and offers less congestion in the CPU area while Venomous X is one of the best Air coolers, but can run into clearance issues. Are there any other decent alternatives if my priorities are best cooling for a CPU @ 4.5GHz with minimal congestion directly over the CPU area. I don't care about the noise of fans etc. Also all out water cooling is not an option currently.

Best alternate option is Noctua NH-U12P SE2 ~ 3750... comes with two fans... unlike Venomous X which doesn't come wid fans... and its a very silent cooler... Plus Noctua provides free mounting kits whenever AMD or Intel launches a new socket... :D

Edit: Forgot to mention that it also performs very well... :P

^+1 for the U12P. Performs pretty good. TBH the Sandybridge chips does not benefit much from a better beefier heatsink like the Conroes did. stalker could push the clocks to 4.2G with the stock cooler IIRC. Well yeah the temperatures could be kept lower.

4.4G :P

The stock cooler IS super shitty though. Half the size of my Pentium E2240's heatsink. It peaks out at 82-83C during Linpack.

Sandy Bridge CPU's are infact those CPU's which benefit the most with beefier heatsink. I am sure stalker cannot be stable 24/7 @ 4.4Ghz with the stock cooler whereas with a beefier heatsink, even 5.0Ghz 24/7 is easily possible.

actually, I am :D
look at my show-off thread for a screenie of IBT.

Like I said, it runs a little toasty.. but it runs.

The thing is that even the Noctua NH-U12P will not allow me to use Corsair Vengeance sticks . I will either have to bank on 4 x 4GB Ripjaws X to work properly or just get the vengeance sticks and Corsair H70.

Btw, does anyone know if the Antec Kuhler H20 620 is available in India?

It seems to be on ITDepot website.

Edit: There seem to be a few Antec Kuhler heatsinks on ITDepot website.

@Lord Nemesis, thebanik : How does the antec cooler stack up against the likes of the NH12P, TRUE 120 etc?

And what are the benefits over a 4.2~4.4GHz clocks IRL apps? Couple of frames more in a game or few seconds shaved while compressing a file?

Why are you so interested in Corsair Vengeance? :S it just has fancy looking heatsink thats all... you should buy them only if you are gonna overclock the RAMs also otherwise i dont see any point in buying them... you should buy Ripjaws X or Ripjaws sticks instead...

And for long term usage people prefer air coolers more because air coolers lasts longer then water coolers...

In that case, SB even on stock clocks is one of the best processors clock to clock when compared to any another architecture/platform. What is the benefit to overclock it to even 4.2-4.4Ghz? Other than resolutions above 2560, and SLI GPUs, CPU would never be a bottleneck.

Its supposedly better than Corsair H70 and close to Venomous X.

While I am not going to run above the rated 1600Mhz speed, I intend to populate all 4 Memory slots on my motherboard (4 x 4GB) and Corsair Vengeance is tested to work with boards like P8P67 Deluxe in such configuration while some people have had problems running Ripjaws X at rated speeds. To complicate matters, What I have available are discrete 1 x 4GB Kits of both and not matched pairs/quads.

If that were the case, I would be trying to reuse my TRUE120 with a new 1156 bolt through kit instead of trying to buy a new cooler.

^^ Yeah, they have only the Air coolers. Even the new Corsair H60 seems to be similar to the Antec Kuhler. Performance of H70 with a Radiator similar in size to H50 and a fan that is quieter than both H50 and H70.

^Be warned that these coolers don't have the best tubing. Many users have reported the tubing to crack/break after frequent removals and reinstallations.

Yup, have personally seen the CoolIT domino (on which the H60 is based) leaking myself. :(

I wasn't even thinking of going WC I asked about the Kuhler looking at the prices quoted at ITDepot for the air coolers.

PS: Back to the RAM discussion.

@Gannu: So you are getting your Ripjaws right?

@Lord Nemesis: Which one did you finalize?

I spoke to Prime today, they are asking for a 2750x2 for the Corsair XMS3 1600 so i'd rather get the Ripjaws x 1600 (2x4GB) for 5600 shipped from SMC.
