It looks like Kobo is the alternative for Kindle readers but is costly. Some redditors are saying that remove the DRM and convert it and use it via Kobo.
If you are not stuck to the Amazon ecosystem, I found the best alternative is to use the devices with the same ereader screen from the Chinese manufacturers like Boox, Bigme running Android. The hardware costs the same but then you basically can do anything that you would do on an Android device.

I had an acquaintance bring it via AliExpress, but it is indeed a bit difficult to get it directly now. There are some resellers for these devices in India but the premium becomes too much then over Amazon or Kobo.
But yes, the better SoC and RAM does mean that the browser and Android apps are a lot more functional than what Amazon or Kobo offers for the same price.

I am guessing that the battery life would be poor on these, especially standby life.
In any case, I bought a scribe yesterday (for a significant discount) as there was nothing that came at that price with a backlight and that size.
