Amazon, Snapdeal won't follow Flipkart to app-only format

"Our data shows that there are still many customers who use PCs to shop online. We do not want to force our customers to use one specific medium to shop on Snapdeal," a Snapdeal spokesperson said.

Akshay Sahi, customer experience head at Amazon India, too, said, "We believe that as a consumer-obsessed company, we have to enable our customers to shop anytime, anywhere, and anyway they want."

Myntra, the country's largest fashion retail portal, closed down its website on Friday and moved to a mobile-only platform. Its parent, Flipkart, plans to follow suit within a year.

In my 30+ orders on Myntra. I think I used their App for like 10% of time only; that too because there was some app specific coupon. But I guess the move is based on the trend that a person may not have a PC but will have some sort of smartphone.

Still do not make sense to me; in future perhaps, but I am sticking up with my PC.

I don't understand this move. i always compare prices on these online sites.
so soon i wont even be browsing their catalog which is step 1 of creating a sale.
Are they really saving any money by switching to mobile only?

I wish newegg would set-up shop in India already.

Ofc i don't understand the move aswell but I am sure their data showed that app sales are better in some way and they wouldn't have made this move unless it brought them more revenue. Let's see how it all turns out.

^that doesn't mean you shut down website. I always compare using Website. And once I finalise, then I may buy from app.

True. I prefer browsing products on my desktop and comparing with other sites, reading reviews, etc. Use the app if there is any promotion.

No other commerce sites WORLDWIDE are trying this mobile only model. this seems to be specific to India only.
This reminds me way too much of the f4 phantom. it was the first aircraft that would be fitted with beyond-visual-range missiles and the engineers were so confident of the abilities of the new jet+missile combo that they did not arm it with an integrated aa cannon which turned out to be a hard lesson learnt in korea.

One would think that expanding the customer base would be more conducive than ignoring some 30% of their revenue stream.

Similar for me. Around 20+ orders via PC, ZERO via mobile as I only shop online via my PC!

I unsubd from their emails successfully but I still get annoying SMS's on my phone telling me to "download their wonderful app" or simply regarding flash sales.

Any idea how one can unsubscribe from their SMS's as well?

I am also facing the same issue, i still get sms from them regarding so and so. Anyway to me, jabong has 10 times better collection than myntra or any other indian online fashion stores.

ya but u doing that doesn't mean everyone does that. Trust me, I have seen my relatives just seeing some clothes are ordering it via COD with no comparisons done by other sites or seeing other sites prices whatsoever.

When the officials would have put the charts, data, comparisons and seen the opportunity of going all app only, they must have seen everything and then only proceeded. I myself don't like this but then what can we d anyways, it's their decision.

Flipkart bought myntra to kill it. They wanted only one entity as advertising both individually is going to cost very much. Flipkart already have only a desktop site and app. For which they have been criticized all over the place.

Now, they are trying to test the public perception by forcing them to use app only on myntra. They wanted to kill myntra anyways. This would kill it for sure and they would also get to test the waters.

That's two targets achieved in a single step. Unfortunately, the ones who take the decessions dont spend a single penny from there pockets as the investors are different. So, that's why they take such stupid decessions. The very moment they would have to spend that money from there own pockets. They won't take those stupid decessions.

Highly unlikely that this is based on actual sales numbers. What I think is that may be they have looked at number of customers with mobile app installed or number of hits to their servers from the app and used that to justify this ridiculous move. Its also possible that they even considered the sales numbers, but still thought that they can force people to use the app.

Anyways, I have been curious about this whole "app only" stunt for a while now and would definitely like to know what they are up to. My ex-colleague happens to be a Senior Engineering Manager for Mobile at Flipkart. I have not been in touch with him, but may be he can shed some light.

My own company realizes the potential of the mobile market and is currently very mobile focused. We had about a little over €120 million in revenue from mobile offerings last year, but its still only 20% of total revenue. We have goals to grow it to 50% of total revenue in another year, but that does not mean it would be at expense shutting down the desktop/web based channels altogether. Maybe there would be less focus and investment, but at no point of time would anybody be crazy enough to ditch an existing revenue channel in this manner.
