AMD announces Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition !

Special edition processor sings the final swansong for the Athlon 64 X2 brand
:)

AMD has now officially announced the final CPU that will use the Athlon 64 X2 name; the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition.
The original rumours stated that the new chip would have a clock speed of 3.2GHz, 2MB of Level 2 cache and a TDP of 125W.
AMD said that the processor will be available at the end of August for about $240, which translates into a 35% premium over the 3.0 GHz 6000+ processor, which is currently offered for a tray price of $178. A few U.S. retailers have made the CPU available for pre-odder on their websites with prices ranging from about $260 to $290.

There is some confusion why AMD decided call the new CPU "Black Edition". This moniker recently has been used by Mercedes-Benz to name an especially sporty and limited production version of its CLK series, indicating that AMD also had a special and limited production model in mind. It is unclear whether AMD will be carrying over the new brand to the
upcoming Phenom X2 and X4 processors. They had a nice series of processors with tag X2 and this is the last one. Good luck to AMD

arey dude there is no quad core released frm amd yet..and all this are am2 socket stuff..get your fundas clear

am2 itself is a socket name..jus it used to be 939 socket earlier

Thats dual core...they r just pushing the clocks higher...basically a faster CPU that will probably only OC as much as X2 6000.

No this isn't a special edition Mercedes

AMD today silently resuscitated its 90nm Windsor core with a bump in clock speed in the form of the Athlon 64 X2 6400+. The latest Athlon 64 X2 runs at 3.2 GHz – higher than any available Core 2 Duo offering. Each core has access to its own 1MB of L2 cache.

AMD labels the new Athlon 64 X2 6400+ as the Black Edition, in matching black packaging. The new model does not have the lower 89 watt TDP as the upcoming Windsor refresh. Instead, the processor carries a 125 watt TDP rating, nearly three times higher than the Athlon X2 BE-series.

Since AMD is aiming for a silent launch with the Athlon 64 X2 6400+, it will not make it into reviewer’s hands. AMD will not offer the processor to PC manufacturers either, according to Scott Wasson, Tech Report. The only way to get a hold of the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ is through the channel.

AMD prices the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ at $239, per unit, in 1,000 unit quantities. At that price point, the processor will have to take on Intel’s Core 2 Duo E6750.

$239 & 125W TDP for a 90nm dual core processor which can probably be beaten by a $289 & 95W TDP 65nm Q6600 G0 Stepping

Plus you get 2 extra cores for only $50 more :eek:hyeah:

AMD has gone crazy since C2D & C2Q came out now AMD is just trying to fool people with the more MHz = more Speed theory :p

That is not a real argument , pit it against ant core 2 duo processor and we can see . Sure its priced higher , werent c2d's priced higher when they launched . Still are if you ask me :D

i do not think a quad core for $289 (costs 12-14k here) is costly :p
