how do they compare against the previous generation of chips?

and whats the difference between llano and BD and zambezi?

like, what would be a 955 or 635 be equal to, in terms of price?

also, can someone compare 955 and 635 performance against BD please?

coz im going to upgrade my system, and want to know whether to wait for current prices to drop or go for BD next month

^^ the demonstration/possibly reviews will be up on June 7th. Just wait till then, right now nothing can be said, but in general, BD should perform better(i hope so).

@rabid.parrots

Llano is the code name for the upcoming mid range desktop processors which also have a graphics unit built in, something like "AMD Radeon HD6620M". And this falls under AMD Fusion.
Bulldozer is/was the code name for the processors meant for the server segment.
Zambezi is again a code name. Its the derivative of Bulldozer for the desktop segment and will cater to the enthusiasts, carrying the name 'FX-xxxx'.

@dreamcatcher :
Llano is for regular ppl like me, who dont have too much money
bulldozer is for enterprises
zambezi is for hard core gamers and designers, right?

What follows is imho:

Zambezi is for those guys who own servers or crunchers for wcg.

it makes absolutely no sense for the "hard core gamers" to prefer Zambezi over Intel's upper tier (even though you may not be actually cpu limited depending on your hardware.)

AMD's upper tier is going to be a tough sell for enthusiasts who would rather spend a bit more and go Intel now than wait for eternity for an untrustworthy platform which may (still unproven since we don't have real numbers) not meet the single thread ipc performance of the competition half a decade on.

Even though I somewhat like what they did with Brazos, but for desktops, especially performance oriented ones, AMD ain't gonna be as appealing, especially with Ivy Bridge @ 22nm launching soon after that.

<- rant from an AM3 rig owner and former AMD fan

Keenly awaited by many computer enthusiasts, AMD's first desktop Bulldozer processors won't reach retail until the third quarter of 2011, even though the Sunnyvale-based company plans to officially unveil them in early June.

To wait or not to wait... what sayst thou o wise ones...:) will it ever see the light at the end of the tunnel:)

Wrong on the bulldozer part .. It goes like this. AMD had K10 "architecture" from a long time with Phenom I (65nm), they tuned the K10 -> K10.5 and made the Phenom II (45nm). But with increase in demand of competitive CPU's AMD had to come up with new architectures. Which will drive the way for new CPU's.

Fusion is a part of fusing away CPU and GPU/Nb and IMC into a single entity called APU (Accelerated Processing Unit). The architecture that fall under APU's is Bobcat. Bobcat makes the fundamental of Brazos platform which includes AMD E3XX and CX / GX series of APU's (40nm) and hudson d1 controller currently available in ultraportables like HP DM1z and Lenovo X120e.

Llano is the codename of mid / sub high end APU's which are built using improved K10 architechture marketed as A series APU. These forms the basic of Sabine platform for laptops and Lynx for desktop. The new husky core has improved gating and power management techniques making it far superior to that of current Phenom II in respect to performance and power management. Llano will be replaced by Trinity in the next APU refresh. Llano will be launched at Computex next week.

The last part of the puzzle is Bulldozer. Its not a CPU its an architecture just like Bobcat. Using this architecture AMD develops Zambezi for Desktop and Interlagos (16 BD core)/ Valencia (8 BD core) for Server. Processors like FX 8/6/4 are part of Zambezi portfolio. The Zambezi codenamed processors forms the part of Scorpios platform.

Hopes that clear the confusion among AMD upcoming processor.

Yes I should have been much more clearer in my explanation. Keeping it simple and not confuse 'rabid.parrots' with extra info was my intention, but anyway Dark Star is spot on here.

Bulldozer is the code name of one of the two next generation core architectures, the other being “Bobcatâ€. Using which “Interlagos†(16-core) and “Valencia†(8-core) for servers and "Zambezi" for desktop are built.
