CPU/Mobo AMD CPU & mobo

Hi guys,
Recently my old m/b died. Although I have sent the same for repairs but just to check in case if it doesnt get repaired I asked for AM2 cpu & m/b. Here is the offer I was given :-

AMD 3600+ D/C :- 5750
Asus M2NMX :- 3900

Now, this comes to around 10k now my requirements as well as some sub-set questions are ?

Requirements :-

1. Good integrated Graphics card for playing games as well as possibility to access RAM to play richer games.

2. If I get DDR2-533 then its good or isnt worth at this point in time. I ask as DDR2 is still being quoted twice as much as DDR1. So the difference is quite a lot still.

3. If possible would be also looking to have a PCI-x graphics slot so can buy a graphics card l8ter if pocket permits :)

The budget can be moved to couple of thousand more but thts the upper-most limit. If its something around these budget then can spend more on RAM. :)

Now options for CPU are the AMD family while m/b can be either Asus, Gigabyte or any other as far as I can get good warranty support in Pune. So come on guys, post ur experiences :)

Go 4 Msi K9ngm2(best Onboard Sol. 4 Am2), If Possible Go 4 Amd X2 3800+ And There Is Not Much Price Difference Between Ddr1 &ddr2, Beside Am2 Socket Will Only Support Ddr2.

Recommended Config:

AMD X2 3800+ / 4200+

MSI K9NGM2 Motherboard

This config. is enough to handle Windows Vista so no need to buy a separate Graphics Card now.

Buy a Corsair 512MB/ 1GB DDR2 667MHz Value Select RAM if possible.

hi guys,

thnx for the info. Now reading the MSIK9NGM2 there is supposed to be an optional TV-out can somebody explain me is/will there be a price difference & what sort of pricing can I expect on the m/b. Other things look cool :)

Lastly, AMD doesnt seem to have moved to the pinless processors still atleast from the images of Socket AM2? Are pinless processors on the horizon for AMD or is this going to be Intel only thing for time to come?

AMD's Socket F (1207 pins) is pinless. Of course you need a lotta cash to afford that socket  . But yes, AM2 still has pins on the CPU.

Most CPU manufacturers switch to pinless designs when they're facing space constraints/large number of pins. For eg, the LGA 775 procs are much smaller in dimension compared to Socket 939 or AM2 which is why they needed to go pinless.

I think the X2 3600+ is pretty decent VFM if you're on a tight budget. It runs at the same 2.0Ghz clock speed as the X2 3800+, the only downside is the 256K L2 cache (considering AMD's on-die mem controller, cache size usually has quite a negligible impact). The 3600+'s being sold are the Energy Efficient ones too (65W TDP). Moreover I dont think the X2 3800+'s have dropped below 7k (making the price diff quite huge for the additional 512K L2 cache).

About the RAM, you could also consider Dynet sticks. They seem pretty good, come bundled with 3 yr warranty - CPU-Z confirmed these were A-Data sticks as well. And are incredibly cheap (Raghu said he picked up 1GB sticks for 3.7k, i was less fortunate and got them for 4k).

Remember though that the k9ngm2 has no overclocking options in the bios... so if you're into overclocking don't expect nething much from the board... otherwise it's a very good board.

Hi Shirish,

Last week I bought a PC for home use from Stech Computers Pune.
See http://www.techenclave.com/forums/got-a-new-pc-85437.html

I feel that the price your dealer has quoted for AMD 3600+ D/C :-( 5750) and Asus M2NMX :-( 3900) is OK. Even the dealer I bought from quoted a similar price. However, he said that
AMD X2 3600+ were selling in high volumes and he ran out of stock.

If you are looking for a good integrated gfx card then it would be wise to go in for a Geforce 6150 based mobo. These boards fit well into a budget config and do a reasonably decent job. Of course for playing games you would definetly need a good graphics card.
Also you must go in for a socket AM2 config are this will future proof your system. Go in for as much RAM as possible bcos RAM prices will head northwords since Vista has arrived.

Btw which dealer have you approached ?

Hi,

I don't have much knowledge about gfx cards but I am told that Nvidia 7300 GT and ATI X1300 Pro are good entry level cards. But there are Directx 9.0 cards so maybe we should wait till Directx 10.0 cards enter the mass market

I'm not into o/c but would be using stock speeds. The dealer I spoke to was DCC. I have no idea if the X2 3600+ are in the same price range or not :( I also heard about the Dynet sticks from them & now come to know tht some of Simmtronics modules also have them. The only difference I guess is the packaging which is offered between the two while Dynet has advantage in pricing. Nobody gave me the pricing for the MSI K9NGM2 which is kinda sad :( . As far as Socket F is concerned its seems to be for the Server m/b (Opetron series) so out of budget :(

It will be nice if somebody knows site of Dynet as saw this thread http://www.techenclave.com/forums/dynet-512mb-x-2-ddr400-memory-73400.html which is cool. Now dont know whether the pics. shown means Dynet is being sold loose or comes in similar packaging as Simmtronics is (anti-static as well as plastic packaging) Darky or somebody else might be able to give more of a better idea. Better is if somebody knows the website of Dynet.

I will have to check by the model no. if its Orleans Core or something else :) Lot of research yet to do :)

Got my m/b repaired so don't have to buy anything just yet. Thank God :)

Whenever I upgrade ( read tht as next yr.) it would be AMD for sure as I'm sure u guys know of Intel limiting AMD for 20% share by unfair business means, European Union is going to sue these guys :)
