Hey,

I need suggestions for an AMD setup .. will be used mostly for gaming .. this is what I have in mind

AMD Phenom II 550BE - 0925 CPMW (Will the 4th core unlock and oc stable?) [from a friend]

Any idea when the 555BE will be launched? (p.s. I can't wait longer than a week)

IIRC prime abgb had the 0927 EPMW when I last checked

DDR3 2gb/4gb - will be running windows 7 32bit .. so does it make sense to go in for 4 gb? (Please suggest some)

MSI 4870 1GB DDR5

Dell 24"

HDD 750 x 1, 500 x 1, 640 x 1 (All SATA) will be adding atleast another HDD, probably a 1.5TB

ROM - DVD Writer x 1 (SATA)

Audio - Creative X-Fi Platinum

Corsair TX750

Mobo - I am really confused - have short-listed these

Newegg.com - ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - BIOSTAR TForce TA790GX A3+ AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - MSI 790GX-G65 AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

P.S. Please remember I'm hoping for a successful unlock to the x4 B50 and I want to overclock it too :)

Please do mention the prices and availability in Mumbai.

More SATA/USB ports the better :P

Also, just may go crossifre in a couple of months :D

Cheers,

Ashwin

0929 and 0932 batches have got a higher chance of unlocking. These days, most unlock atleast to tricore and all mobo manufacturers have got such an option.
555BE should be available within a week, that's what one of the vendors in hyderabad tells me. I am not very sure though. From the reviews it seems it's worth waiting for. overclocked to 4ghz at1.45V is great.
Some of the mobos you short listed aren't available in India at a good price. Considering price/performance/overclockability, I think MSI 790GX-G65 is great at <7K. Warranty might be an issue though. Check who's providing service for msi products at your location. In my place things have changed for the better.
If you can afford >10K, nothing beats Gigabyte 790fxt ud5p if you consider warranty service( in India) and performance. Just read some reviews and have a look at some forums like XS.
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO < 7K is also a good option if you aren't keen on heavy overclocking. It doesn't support 8x 8x crossfire though.
Go for 4gb ram, you will need it future. You should consider 64 bit os. Any reason for using 32 bit os? On a 32 bit os , if you install 4gb, it will use a bit more than 3GB better than 2GB especially as you seem to be playing games (what else 4870 1gb and CF is for?).
Do mention your purpose/budget, will help others to give better suggestions.

I will be gaming mostly on this rig .. photoshop too .. and it will serve as my 24x7 download rig too .. movies n music ,,

ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO - heard this board doesn't support A.S.S. completely and it doesnt unlock the 4th core

My budget for the board <7K, Budget for ram <6k

Another option -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416

The boards that aren't available here... I could get them through KMD

Cheers

If your budget for mobo is <7K, then only 790gx-g65 is in that budget, other two would be 10K+.
790XTA-UD4 should be a good mobo which is an update 790XT-UD4P IMO and I am using 790XT-UD4P and I am very satisfied with it. Great overclocker and good features. And gigabyte might honor warranty in India too, if you are lucky(as someone suggested in one of TE posts), otherwise KMD's always there. It should be a good option.
Consider GSkill Ripjaws for your ram should be in your budget.

Mobo budget has just gone flying outta the window .. going for the GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P

Will consider the RAM .. is it 1 x 4 gb or 2 x 2 gb ?

Even the cheapest ram(trasncend) would be around 5K. So you aren't losing much getting gskill. CL does matter whether that be intel or amd. fsb wouldnt matter much, but would be of help when you overclock through ht clock instead of multiplier. I consider overclocking with ht clock better as it allows me to keep cnq enabled, atleast on my mobo(and most mobos I have seen).

DUDE, if u can spend soo much for motherboard(790FX?), why not buy a QUAD CORE instead, how about a Phenom II X4 910e or X4 955 B.E.?

EDIT:-

Anandtech has done a review, and they say that the newly released X2 555 unlocks almost for sure, and OC can be expected in the range 4GHz for stable chips....

For mobo, go for a 790XT ASUS EVO as it's a great board+bundle...

X2 555 is out with way to better oc results, the power consumption is intact though, yet you can get 4.1ghz stable (on good mb) under 1.4V, add to this the unlocking capabilities.

On the board front the 785 EVO will be my pick, or the UD5p if you can extend you budget.

Its between GSKILL and CORSAIR now..

Gskill F3 12800 Cl9D 4GB RL = 6500/- [are these the ripjaws?]

Corsair TW3X4G1333C9A Ram 2 x 2 = 6500/-

Anything better in this price range ?

@Pixel, I'm also going for an upgrade the same as yours, except that the motherboard I've chosen is the one given below:

ASrock M3A785GXH/ 128M Motherboard

VFM mobo, nice reviews too. Just my 2 cents. :cool2:

Thats Def a VFM board!! Do post ur oc results =)

I'm going for a 550BE (from a friend) which unlocks to x4 ... so no point spending more for the proccy...

I'm puttin in the extra $ for the mobo... as I can keep this when amd comes out with a much better processor ..

X2 555 oc nearly as much as a good 550BE .. runs cooler though ,,,

790XT EVO is a good board! I'm going for the best board available locally = ) UD5

I heard there are a lot of bios issues with the 785 evo ?...
Going for the UD5

Thanks for your help GUYS.. do let me know about the ram..

Well, nyc selection, u can upgrade the CPU to a Bulldozer whenever they come out :P, till then a Phenom II X4 will hold out very well..

and also, choose the HD5770 over the HD4870, and get a better PSU like corsair VX550W...

this makes ur PC more future proof, and a even higher end CPU and GPU can be added w/o need for changing any other system component.

Thanks! I'm goin for a x2 which unlocks to x4 =)

I will most likely be going the crossfire way in a couple of months so the 4870 should suffice

using the TX750 :D more than enough for now

Cheers

why the hell do u want to CFx HD4870?? and have a system with 500W + power consumption??

That's why i recommended HD5770...it matches HD5870 is CFx and actually beats it in many of the games(highest performance is around 50% higher than HD5870, unbelievable CFx scaling on HD5000 series)
