Well its because of the odd renaming they are doing , the 6870 you see here isnt meant to be like the 5870 (fastest single gpu card) so thats probably why. Many people were saying that this ought to have been the 6770 and that would have seemed more appropiate. This card should have better tesselation etc and should be priced like the current 5870 itself and basically be a better DX11 card.

They plan a 6970 which will be a single GPU card and that should be a fair bit more powerful than this, early speculation believed prolly 15% or so faster than a 480.

But wasn't Barts supposed to be the replacement for Radeon 57** series... Then where does AMD plan to fit in Cayman and Antilles??

There is a major confusion regarding the naming of Barts SKUs... I guess we better wait till we hear it straight from horse's mouth itself... too much speculations and too may bilnd shots are being fired by tech sites.

Remember guys, the HD6800 is gonna replace HD5700 series, and most probably price wise too. So these are excellent results really.

but again I guess the 6xxx will too miss PhyX, 3D etc.. i know they are nVidia's but will the poor ATI users (what sin or crime did my 5850 do:P) get them or any alternatives:( (Mafia 2 with PhyX max looks awesome)

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

just saw the link again and a user has mentioned the below point which i guess should clear all our doubts (but why AMD changing this.. x800 with x900:huh:)

"The 5850 is replaced by the 6950, and the 5870 by the 6970, the 69xx is the new high end with the dual gpu card being the 6990"

Also there is a new review for ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI gtx 460 card..

http://en.expreview.com/2010/10/12/...eference-asusmsigigabyte-gtx-460-2/10692.html

If we look at the gaming performance the ASUS leads the no:2 MSI by 5%
http://en.expreview.com/2010/10/12/...rence-asusmsigigabyte-gtx-460-2/10692.html/16

But overall MSI Hawk is the winner beating ASUS by 12% http://en.expreview.com/2010/10/12/...rence-asusmsigigabyte-gtx-460-2/10692.html/17

I select cards mainly on gaming performance as all are 460 variants only:S:S

If the card they name 6870 is equal or barely faster than a 5870 thats a shame imo, its the same as the 8800gt 9800gt stunt nvidia pulled. Its misleading as many people buying that will think they are getting a generation better than 5870 and the improvement that will come with it.

But 3dmark performance and game performance could be quite different , also this is DX11 so it will be interesting to see if AMD have managed to improve on the DX11 performance.

Also with a 5850 add some 2nd hand card like a 8800 as physx and you can play the games with custom drivers , I havent tried so myself but many people are doing it shouldnt be an issue. If you already have a 5850/5870 this is probabaly a option you guys should look at , but really im not sure there are that many games out there with Physx but then again Mafia 2 with full physx is pretty awesome.

Yes, 6800 series is more like 9800 to GTS 250 name changing game if the performance really matches. Hopes for a price reduction also fade away.

This naming change is one of the best thing AMD has done in a long time. I will try to justify this(of course as details are scant, many things are just my speculation). The most critical thing the dozens of people are missing is power consumption. The second most critical thing is that 3dmark vantage is not a directx 11 benchmark. Here is the TDP's (in watts) of the high end cards from the 4000 series and 5000 series and my guess for the 6000 series(could be utterly wrong!).

4850 - 130

4870 - 150

5850 - 151

5870 - 188

6850 - 130

6870 - 160

I will try to justify my guesses. As the 6000 series is also going to be a 40nm card and as it is the evergreen series has been praised for excellent power efficiency, AMD could not have bought down the power consumption much (10-20 % max). From an earlier leaked slide( can't remember where I saw it, probably Fudzilla), the 6850 TDP < 150w and the TDP of 6870 > 150 W.

So what AMD is trying to say is that graphics cards are not going to be named based on absolute performance but rather on a combination of performance per watt and absolute perfomance. Moreover this leak only confirms that with the beta drivers, the 6850 and 6870 are slightly slower than their 5000 series counterparts. With driver update, we may safely assume that the performance difference is negligible. But, do not forget that 3dmark vantage does not test directx 11 features like tessellation, which is one of NVidia's strengths. I am sure AMD has greatly improved tessellation performance (pure speculation, no justification!) so newer games which use these features will run faster on the 6000 series than the corresponding part from the 5000 series. Here is the conclusion: we have a card which performs about the same on directx 10 games, is faster on directx 11 games and consumes lesser power. Hence this a very good move by AMD, reiterating the importance of power efficiency and sending a clear message to Nvidia.

^^

You should be holding up decent still. :) Or you want the Dx11 goodies..? The soft launch+reviews should hit us anytime next week. Expect couple more weeks for them to trickle down. Guess around Xmas or post 2011 celebrations you should be able to purchase HD69xx. (same here).

^^Post 2011? We are referring to the HD69xx series not HD7xxx! :bleh:

btw.. When are the high end 69xx series going to launch? I am need a GPU upgrade soon.
So do I. Wait a second, aren't we the first ones in the forum to get the 4850 GPU? I mean more specifically, wasn't I the first to lay hands on a bunch of 4850s, way back in June 2008? :P

I am sick of lowering the settings on some recent games. :ashamed:

Frankly you will not notice it while playing the game. And you can always have second low end nvidia GPU for physx. If you have high resolution monitor and like to play games with all details maxed out, you have to switch off physx in most games to get acceptable gameplay out of single GPU.

And btw stereoscopic 3D will come to ATI as well with HD6xxx ;)

idont miss Physx at all, and the price of the 3D kit puts a dampner to my purchase.
