Officially launched today (though appeared in Newegg couple of weeks ago). Most major manufacturers launched them and have great features (DDR3, SB710 - ACC option in bios, DX10 compliant inbuilt graphics ....) and excellent pricing.

Expected time for availability (locally)? Price?

With the release of Phenom II and Athlon II , AMD finally had something to compete with Intel counterpart. But there was nothing new in the motherboard segment to enchant the audience with something refreshing, however AMD spiced up its older 790FX/GX to be able to utilize the newer processors but still the new processors deserves a new platform.

With increase in demand and profit. AMD planned to introduce a low end motherboard before releasing its new linup i.e 8 Series which will contribute to the Leo platform. Today AMD unveils its latest 785 chipset based aimed for HTPC and enthusiast on budget.

The newboard is however aimed at the newly released Athlon II but you can use any Am3 based processor with it. The new chipset will bring a new onboard graphics which is a fork of ATI HD 3000 series and has been renamed as ATI HD4200. The 785 has the 4200 clocked at 500mhz which is lower than the current generation 790GKX's HD3300. You can hope for the higher clocked version with RS880D chipset.

The new chipset allows manufacturer to either to choose DDR2/DDR3 depending on the segment they are aimed at. The new chipset brings in lots of features for HD encoding like UDV 2.0, Direct X 10.1, ATI avivo, and plethora of other addons. The board brings the Windows 7 support to market.

Many vendors has already pushed the 785 based boards in the market and should be available under 5000 INR soon..

AnandTech: AMD's 785G Chipset - Revolutionary or Evolutionary?

Remember when ATI made crappy chipsets that no one bought, and all AMD systems were built with NVIDIA or even VIA chipsets? Yeah, that memory is fading for us too.

Today we get to officially unveil the 785G, the latest in integrated graphics chipsets by AMD for AMD. As the name implies, there is very little separating 785G from its predecessor (780G) and we’re quite ok with that. In fact, the only reason not to get a 780G is addressed by the 785: the new chipset supports 8-channel LPCM audio over HDMI. The lack of TrueHD and DTS-HD audio bit-streaming remains but neither is this feature supported on other chipsets. We also see a jump from HDMI 1.2 to 1.3 standards.

The rest of the major improvements are strictly related to video playback duties. We jump from Universal Video Decoder (UVD) 1.0 on the 780G to UVD 2.0 capabilities on the 785G. The video decode engine supports decoding multiple HD streams (useful for picture-in-picture on a Blu-ray movie) and additional post processing effects if you are not a big video purist. Also new is the 785G's ability to perform detail enhancements on the fly.
are mobos based on this chipset available here? the price quoted is 89$...so 5k here shud be the deal

So now we can see budget ddr3 phenom II based rigs. 780G mobos nowadays starts at 3.5k. It would be great if there is a ddr3 based config for 3.5k mobo and 5k proccy like X2 550, with the desent IGP with 785G.

ddr3 module prices are falling rapidly. Transcend ddr3 1333 2GB sticks are there for 2k, which is better than most normal 1066mhz ddr2 and priced much lower.

following advantages over 780G

- Advanced Clock Calibration is present in 785

- Integrated Radeon HD 4200

Following Advantages over 790GX

- Low cost

Its a DX 10.1 compliant with UVD2. Gaming performance is similar to that of 780G..

Now with 8 channel LPCM support, it will be attracted more to HTPC buffs..

785G is superior to 790GX and 780G in HTPC features, as it now offers 8 channel LPCM support along with improved UVD 2..

Gaming performance is inferior to 790GX but similar to 780G..:)

nothing extraordinary abt this chipset.Only added feature is that it supports newer proccy

it dun support ny newer proccys, which isnt supported by a 780G. But it has practically less CPU support [X4 920 and 940:eek:hyeah:].

as masterBrain said
it has ACC, HD 4200, DDR3, lower price and power consumption, pure am3 in addition to older 780G and almost at same price point.

NB has got nothing to do with Advanced Clock Calibration.. it is possible if the board sports sb710, sb750 and above..

Yeah it doesnt support eight channel LPCM over HDMI which is essentially required by hard core HTPC enthusiast. Else others can bother less about it.
