Hello TE,

I need a little help choosing a motherboard for my 550 BE. I went to my local dealer this is what he offered me.

DDR2 Mobos

Asus M4A78-E for 8.7k
Biostar TA-790GX-BE for 4.8k
Gigabyte MA790GP-UD4H for 9k
MSI 790GX-G55 for 7.2k

DDR3 Mobos

MSI 790GX-G65 for 8k
Asus M4A785-TD-V-EVO for 6.8k

Can these motherboards unlock 550BE to B50 quad?
I'm keen on getting the Asus or Gigabyte ones so are there any other alternatives to these.

I don't have fixed budget but I don't want to spend too much. So if there are any other options at around 7k then I'll surely look into them.

Couple of things I'm looking for in a board:-

I don't want to purchase m-ATX boards because of my GPU eating away a PCI slot.
I have single GPU and plan to keep it that way so crossfires and SLI and onboard graphic solutions are unimportant to me.
Not looking for DDR3 motherboards but if there's a good model I wouldn't mind looking into it.
I plan to heavily overclock so something a little OC friendly would be great.

Biostar TA-790GX-BE for 4.8k

most of the people have unlocked their processor on the above board.

MSI GD70 if you want to overclock. It will do crazy well on that, the support is great and is one of the top three boards for AM3 today. Around 11k including tax. the best option would be the Gigabyte 790FXT, but that would cost you around 12.5k or so plus tax.

where r u from dude ... those prices are a bit on the higher side.

For DDR3, ASUS board is a good choice. And for DDR2, look for a 770 based board if u can !!

TA 785GE 128M is a micro ATX and is strictly a budget mobo.

my preference in order are

1.Gigabyte GA770T UD3P : 6.5k [DDR3 and excellent OCing]

2.Asus Asus M4A785-TD-V-EVO : 6.5k

3.Biostar TA 790GXB A2 +: 4.8k

4.Biostar TA 790GX 128M: 5.5k

All these are really vfm mobos, and offer gr8 ocing.

I have a Biostar TA790GX A3+ ( AM3 ) and it clocks pretty hardcore, letting me take up my unlocked x2 550BE to a little over 4 on my SCCF and ~4.2Ghz when running in dual core mode. But layout is rather daft, and my X-Fi almost touches my GTX260 cuz the bottom slot is the primary slot.

well these are Pune prices, I don't have much idea whether they are on the higher side or not cause I know only 2 computer hardware stores here. Also 770 boards are not available here as told by my dealer.

Can I order the Gigabyte GA770T UD3 (DDR2 one) from anywhere in India?

The 770T looks like an ideal mobo for me too but I don't get why $80 becomes 6.5k when it gets to india. That is even significantly more expensive than getting it via KMD.

Why do you want to go for 770 when you can also get 790 boards?

Well most users with a GPU won't need all the features that is offered by 790 boards. Prices outside India of 770 boards are just too good for vfm setups.

I'm pretty sure if the prices were right on 770 boards it would sweep away a majority of the market which look into Processors like 550BE and 720BE.

Like the Gigabyte 770-UD3P is priced around 6.5-7k here. Someone looking for a feature rich board could easily opt for the many Biostar motherboards priced lower than this and featuring the 790+SB750 chipset. Or even the MSI G65 board priced a little higher than that.

Oh boy, prices for this board have fallen by nearly Rs 1200 within 4 months.

MSI 790GX-G65 for 8k

I have this board and it is very good, stable. It has lot of options to tweak/overclock. But if you want to unlock the cores on your proccy then it is not possible. I have a unlockable PhenomII 720BE, but it doesn't unlock on this board.

For unlocking cores try the Biostar MBs.

790 has nothing more to offer than a 770 except CF and IGP. Performance of 770 is on par with 790, and OC potential too. If you are sure, not to go CF and always use a GPU[not IGP] then 770 is the way to go, as the boards ll be more expandable with more useful slots like PCI 2.0 or PCIE 1X instead of a PCIE 16X.

@rajndra
it shud be able to, with all 790+SB 750 mobos. You just need the right BIOS. And the OCing features more or less lies in 790 chip, and just the layout of the BIOS changes. Stability depebds on the MCP and pwm coolers, caps, CPU Phases, ferrite cores quality, and the PCB quality.
