Nearly 25 years ago, Prathap C. Reddy, a cardiologist set up a hospital in Chennai after he lost a patient who could not afford to go to the United States for surgery. At Apollo Hospitals, things have come full circle since, with a 65-year old American undergoing a heart transplant here.

In the process, two records were also created. The patient was not only the first U.S. citizen to undergo a heart transplant in India, but he was also the oldest person to undergo a heart transplant in the country, Paul Ramesh, primary consultant cardiac surgeon who performed the surgery said.

The recipients heart function was about 28 per cent and in January, doctors back home in Minneapolis told him that he required a heart transplant within a year, failing which he would die, T. Sunder, consultant cardiac surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, explained.

However, the American recounted in a press conference on Thursday, it could have taken him a year and a half to get a heart back home. He had meanwhile, read of the facilities for heart transplant in India, checked with some friends and decided to make the trip to India to get a new heart.

On the night of July 21, the American got really lucky. A brain dead donor's 36-year old heart was available but there were no other takers. M.R. Girinath, chief cardio vascular surgeon, called up the State co-ordinator for the Cadaver Transplant Programme seeking a go-ahead to use the heart on the foreigner. Once the sanction came, the hospital performed the transplant, working eight hours to put an Indian heart into an American.

This news really needs some coverage in the States - only then will those chaps realise that we are not a country of impoverished beggars barely living from hand to mouth.

I feel more happiness when a conman Indian afford such treatment & surgery, though I wish no one ever requires to go through. :)

I will pray for same American that he will resume his normal healthy life soon :)

In case you didn't know the only reason that fellow came to India was the extremely high cost of medical services in the states. This whole medical tourism thingy is a fast developing area..

Health insurance companies have such a grip over the american medical system that something as simple as a CT scan costs more than a thousand dollars... Its so crazy expensive that a lot of them find it cheaper to just visit some place like India for getting treated.

^^ generally it is that our population is so much that we are everywhere..

we are there amongst the best and the worst too.

so many fake docs being brought to attention now a days.

Its well known but I think his point was that even with all this development & services most of the West still thinks low of India. They still believe we are living in a medieval world. Some of it is true though but not everywhere & generally. Still they love to look down upon us especially those prick Americans. I'd seen this in numerous forums... :(

Exactly what I am trying to tell. Agreed it is cheaper in India and blah, but remember if it is not good, they wouldn't risk their lives, would they? Certainly they value their lives more than a few thousand dollars! Only goes to show the quality of medical treatment available in India. Affordable to the masses? Mostly not, hopefully we will get there soon :)

Indian always have this need to prove themselves worthy? Why the hell do you need that? Who cares what the people in States think about us? I'm sure they don't care about our opinions. You need to believe in your self rather than having the need to prove yourself to everybody else.

Cheers.

It isn't about proving a point. It is about breaking stereotypes. For a 'developed' country, the US isn't without its share of flaws or people struggling to make ends meet.

We don't need to prove ourselves to anyone

I hate these stories about indians being involved in this thing or another. Yet another indian hired in the obama administration. Obama carries a tiny idol of hanuman in his pocket. GD all those narcissists in the indian media.

same here but we Indians love to pat our own back because no one does, we love forwarding crap emails about all that Indian facts whereas the world fails to recognize us, let it be tata buying jaguar or vip buying delsey, mittal buying arsenal or latest news like some ms. sawant winning the first gold medal in shooting etc

wherever it comes to recognize something, we welcome it with sarcasm (INDIA's biggest weapon to kill the morale) & then threads like these are born.

Get this. We do not influence americans or the west. Its cause of how we are portrayed in their documentaries and their prime time news. But india does influence countries like pakistan, afghanistan and even china. They actually know more about us than we do about them. The reason is because they find us interesting. While we don't find them interesting.

Indians in turn are influenced by the west. Particular their modern architectures. We love to watch their sky scrappers and walk on their boulevards and eat their junk food.
