An idea for internet plans in India

My idle mind came up with this idea while i was day dreaming and thinking about low speeds of internet in India.

I was thinking if I was an isp, what i would do to increase subscriber base and i got this idea based on data usage. I know, the Hayai owner guy came out with this idea of full speed first but his network is not there everywhere and the plans on his site are too costly anyway.

Idea is:

1. Remove FUP completely.

2. No plans based on speed classes. Only fastest possible network speed class.

ex.1- For ADSL network max speed is of 24MBps down, so give full 24MBps speed of download. FIOS will give 100MBps i suppose.

ex. 2 - for mobile 3G networks it would be HSUPA+ speeds of around 21MBps.

3. Roll out prepaid plans based on data usage, more like how electricity is billed based on units usage slabs.

Ex:

0 - 100GB - Flat rate of Rs 550 per month.

101 - 150 GB - Per GB x Rs 5.75

151 - 200 GB - Per GB x Rs 6.50

201 - 300 GB - Per GB x Rs 7.50

301 - 400 GB - Per GB x Rs 8.50

401 - 500 GB - Per GB x Rs 9.50

501 + above GB - Flat rate of Rs 12 Per GB

So data hungry people will always pay more per GB.

No internet browsing after bandwidth usage is fully consumed. It stops completely till recharged. So before GB's are fully consumed just recharge online to get more data.

I was thinking this up according to BSNL's 500 home combo plan where we can download just around 75GB per month for Rs 550. So the slabs are done accordingly, so that the ISP's actually would gain more from high usage downloaders. The network wont get congested since the faster one downloads, the faster he makes bandwidth available to others to download/ browse the net. Imo, better to download a file at 24MBps and get it done with in less than 10mins than take up an hour on normal connection and clog the pipes for that time.

Only problem is how to make all internet service providers think about this plan and give it a try.

I hope you were an ISP. :P

Jokes apart, nothing will happen until the mentality of ISPs in India change. They give high speed plans to consumers as if they are offering a favor or something, that too bundled with FUP in most cases. Why would anyone offer such plans if their competitors are offering nowhere near anything like it and they're going to get consumers anyway, because the consumers have no choice.

Look at how Docomo has priced it's 3G plans. Ridiculously expensive plans tied down by FUP and after the limit what speed they offer, 128 kbps, just half that of EDGE. Even when the infrastructure has finally come to place, there is no way the ISPs have any intention of giving sensible high speed plans.

Unfortunately it could also be due to the public perception of having high speed plans as a luxury rather than a necessity.

interesting thought , now that Kapil Sibal is the interim telecom minister , things can change if he takes up office for a longer run.

+1,he is one minister who does lot of reforming, which can be clearly seen by how he handled his last portfoilio.

@6pack

Really love the idea, please become an ISP,please :ohyeah:

But I dont think the idea will work up as per economics. BSNL manages on Home 500 Combo plans beacuse only 1 out of 20 ppl downloads the shit out during the Night UL time.So its law of averages in play. We should consider using a price of around 12--15 per GB which it costs for most ISPs.

I for one will pay for a 10 Mbps connection with 100GB data at Rs 1000 per month :)

yes it does (according to The Hayai Broadband guy) but for big players like BSNL/Airtel/Tata it will be almost half of that due to the volume. But thing is its just the per GB cost. Consider network cost, profits etc....it will come to Rs 10-12 per GB even for the established players :P

100GB - Flat rate of Rs 550 per month @24MBps would be very great.....

No chance even after 2-3 years :P...even in US it will be difficult to get such a plan :P

Btw ADSL 2 modem supports upto 24 Mbps but for that you have to build your residence next to the exchange ...even for 8-16 Mbps connections BSNL guys ask to be within 500-1000 m of the DSLAM

I think the best way out should be an FUP at a hundred GB plus unlimited sharing through DC++ hubs at the exchange.
This way lines will not be clogged and users will get what can download easily quickly and would be effective use of the resources.
:)

electricity billing schemes all over again :P

im hoping good things will happen soon.

currently i have to shell out 625/month (7500/year) for 10mbps UL on 5net. Although it is a major provider in mumbai, we can expect similar pricing atleast in 1yr for all local ISPs.

3G and all looks promising rightnow but im concerned whether the rates will remain the same(at least) if gov makes the providers pay to cover for losses is spectrum scam.

Then 100GB @8mbps for Rs.500/- ?
