Hello All,

I have a Nexus One with me.

Now if I want to flash it with a custom ROM, I believe that there is a software called Nandroid I can use to take a backup of my complete phone contents in case I need to restore it later.

However, when I install a custom ROM on it, is there any program that can restore all my contact/messages/apps/settings etc alone to the new custom ROM?

Basically I am too lazy to install all the apps and settings etc again. Is there a program that can do it? Since I believe Nandroid can only do a complete backup/restore including the complete ROM/OS.

Nandroid is not an application. It is a part of the Recovery that you use. If all this is complicated for you, use ROM manager and dont play with your phone unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing.

Use SMS Backup+ from the Market. It can backup all your messages to your GMail ID and restore it. As for apps, use Titanium Backup. Not sure how it works for settings since you'll have to do that manually. Now, dont tell me that you dont know how to back up contacts :P

Just sync contacts through the Accounts and Sync menu

Thank you for the wise words sahib :ohyeah:

Yes, I know that nandroid is a recovery mode thing.

So Titanium Backup can handle my apps and some system settings I guess. It doesnt do contacts/sms? I will back those separately.

What else?

I just dont want to go through the process and find I missed something :ashamed:

EDIT: Ok, from the Titanium Backup Wiki:

To restore your SMS/MMS, call logs, phone book, and the like: Tap the “Backup/Restore” button, and scroll the list for those data. They usually appear in green letters with square brackets around. Then deal with them as you would do with “single applications”.

Titanium backup sucks when it comes to SMS. Use MyBackup Pro for SMS. Gets the job done and works across custom roms.

So once you root, download a rom, put it in the root of your SD card, boot into recovery, load Amon Ra or Clockwork Recovery, take nandroid backup (assuming you have taken app + SMS backup before), wipe cache, dalvik cache etc., and flash away :)

Looking at the process I am thinking I should wait and try out Gingerbread first. Hope it gets here soon :p

If you have rooted, you will have to unroot to be able to install the OTA update for Gingerbread - if you try installing it while being rooted, the results could be unpredictable.

Convoluted and messy process.

ROM Manager is a much a better solution. Very streamlined.

Disagree. I didn't like ROM manager at all. Yes probably for first time flashing it's nice, but it hasn't been updated in ages. It's still stuck on Clockwork 2.x when 3.x is already out, doesn't have an exhaustive list of ROMs, etc etc.

Once you've rooted, the process I described is as easy as pie. Unless ROM manager does backups on its own (last I checked it didn't).

IDK how long it's been since you used ROM Manager. ROM Manager has a backup/restore option built in.
Also, I have a Galaxy S Fascinate and all the major ROMs for it are featured in ROM Manager.

Bah I've been using gingerbread since almost a month :P

Goto cyanogen frum..

There u can CM7 which is packed with 2.3.

N1 is such a device to play with.....
Avoid CM7 like plague. Major dialer and contacts issue, nothing works on it right now. Try micromod77s roms

I last used it a month ago. The experience was quite a bit pathetic to be honest, maybe I'm just a power user. It listed mostly unknown roms for HTC Desire, which I'm sure as you know is quite a popular phone. MIUI, Oxygen ROM and others were all missing, and other ROMs listed had old versions. I'd rather take pains to visit xda forums, download the latest version of a ROM and flash it myself.

Stalky boy, agreed ROM Manager makes things simple but there is no fun in that :P

The excitement of flashing on your own and the fear of bricking cannot be replaced

^Is it pathetic because, it doesn't show the ROM's which you like or famous ROM's :P May be you are power user, so want to flash roms by going through recovery, then select the zip file...Or use adb and before that take nandroid backup if required or wipe if required???. All these things not required if you use ROM manager right? Just select the ZIP file from SD card and select options(backup or wipe or both) and done :) And if you flash through ROM manager, even unsigned zip files can be flashed without any issues right?

ROM Manager isn't responsible for listing any of the ROM's. The makers of the respective ROM's have to add it to the ROM Manager listings themselves.

All the ROM's you see right now in ROM Manager is because those devs added it to the listings, and they're responsible for keeping it updated.

Nandroid is most definitely better because it backs up everything as an image file, including text messages. A while back it used to be a separate script, but a lot of the mods that are making custom recovery consoles, include it. If you are using Rom Manager then you have to install the Clockwork Recovery mod (Which includes Nandroid) or you won't be able to use all of it's functions properly. You can do that directly from Rom Manager and it will back up whatever recovery you are currently using before it writes the new one. You can access Nandroid directly from Clockwork Recovery and it will store the image file on your SD card. In my opinion, it's the most solid backup you can do. If you like testing out different Roms, using Nandroid to backup images you can switch back and forth without any loss of anything, and in the exact state you left it.
