Hi,

After years of borrowing cameras from friends (including a Nikon D 3100 and a D 5100, a Canon EOS 350D) I am finally looking to buy myself one. The question that I have in mind is a simple one.

If I buy the base model of Canon (1100 D) or Nikon (D3100) and buy comparatively better lenses like say an EF 85mm f/1.8 will it make sense or I should go for a more expensive body like the d5100 or the Canon 550D and a standard 18-105 everyday lens.

Purpose:

General photography in trips, landscapes, a little bit of faces also. I am not reluctant to learn and improve. However I also do not want to spend a lot and then realize a year down the line- hey I have not used my stuff. I am tempted by the beautiful pictures I see online. There is art there but also the fact that none of them ever use a standard kit lens.

I may sound confused which I am; so feel free o shoot options.

Oh, yes I am looking at an upper cap of 50k unless someone can really convince me otherwise.

Why not go for a long zoom camera like the Sony HX100V or a Nikon P500 or similar instead? You won't be able to change the lenses yes but these camers still offer almost all of the features of a full-fledged DSLR, far more than what a casual / hobby photogrpaher would use. I myslef am using a HX100 and am very satisfied with the results. And it comes with a 30x zoom which is quite adequate for my use.

I think you should start with 1100 D . Once you know what kind of photos you want to take then buy expensive lens. After good practice 1100 D can give amazing performance

@agupta02...Thanks but I do not think I will be content with a point and shoot. The zoom is something I am not really bothered with. It is the quality of the pictures that interest me.

@suds....That was my idea. My worry is I should not outgrow it to soon. There are some very basic problems in these cameras and i have already used these basic models albeit with kit lenses more often than not.

good zooms can cost a fortune with constant aprature ,carl zeiss optics, L lens .. but less expensive primes also deliver stunning results.. first lens you should buy is the 50mm 1.8, you'll never regret it.

That was my initial question...Is it worth buying lets say the 50mm 1.8 and using it with a basic body like the 1100D or D3100 or I need a better body to utilize the same?

Bit off topic

Nikon will soon announce the D3200 DSLR camera which will replace the current D3100 ($549).

The expected specs are:

24 MP sensor

11 AF points

4 fps

ISO range: 100-6400, with hi-ISO of 12800

Improved video functionality

The Nikon D3200 will have some kind of a Wi-Fi connection that is supposed to offer few very interesting new features

Announcement in April, 2012

yes, picture quality wouldn't have much difference. at ISO100 you can't even find difference between a shot taken by canon eos 450D and eos 7d

Thanks buddy. That settles it then. I will probably go for the canon body simply because it has auto focus and a couple of good lenses to start with.

Good call. I have a 1100d and my photographer friend has a 5d markII. In good light condtions the quality difference is minor. The only reason to go for a more expensive camera is if you're looking at proffesional level photographs.

Also as stated before, grab the Canon f1.8 50mm lens. It's brilliant.

Sorry to bring up the old thread. I am finally buying the Nikon D5100
<
and the 18-105mm standard with it. I will not be taking the kit lens.

I am moving to the states in a few days. Is it worth buying in the states. The online prices are around 4k of a difference and the lens is actually more expensive there. (Curse the rupee). I am also worried about customs.

Question: Should I still try to save the 4k or buy it here in India itself?

^ You should also consider the newly announced D3200. I haven't really done a comparison between the D3200 and the D5100, but the specs look good for an entry level model.

One last question. I have purchased the Nikon d 5100 with lens 18-105. I also intend to purchase a ND filter from Hoya. What is the size in mm that I should be using with this lens ?

the filter diameter is printed on the lens,on the rim next to the branding/focal range...its marked by a slashed circle icon

@Manojkrishnaks and @touzeen.....Thanks a lot for your help. Yup for the 18-105 lens I would need a 67mm filter. I am probably going to order the ND filter from Hoya

I hope I make full use of this camera
