I think my search skills are retarded, so here goes -

Can I run xp pro x64 on 2GB of ddr2-800 RAM, or would 4GB be better?

Sorry - I know there's a thread on this somewhere but I can't find it at this ungodly hour. I do remember reading that vista x64 required 4GB of ram, but can't remember if the same applied to xp pro x64.

Tank yoo! :P

whats your general usage ?
Nothing major I think. Besides running AUTO-Cad, everything else is normal usage, with a lot of multi-tasking. No extensive 3D designing or massive gaming going on here. I can just as easily use xp 32bit - was asking more out of curiosity about 'future-proofing' my new rig.

Thanks all.

DDR2 won't future proofed when you are in Vista 64.

How so? Is it because vista 64 is designed to be optimal wit ddr3? A friend of mine is using 4gb ddr2 wit vista premium (normal usage) and he is fine with it so far. Sorry if this sounds stupid - I really don't know.

Yes, thank you. And I will take you up on your offer :hap2:

hhhey..i read it somewhere..that excess RAM than required in sys..wil slow it down..quite a bit..so go 4 it only if u gonna use it...
n for a quick check...open task manager n under performance tab check out peak under commit charge n convert it to mb's..repepat this step 2 3 times on load..n ull get approx amt of ram u generally use...

lol wherd u read that if u get more ram than ud use will slow down ur system , that has to be the post of the year lol

More RAM IS always better.

As for you TOM, like others have said, you can run 64bit versions of Windows even on 512MB.

It's when your system/work requirements ask for more then 2GB of RAM, when 64bit versions of an OS are required (not always the case). That is to say, what you are asking is bit opposite to what happens. Because you can't run 4GB RAM on 32bit systems (again, generally).

As for future proofing, go ahead if you want to. But if your needs never exceed more then GB of RAM and things are not gonna change for a year or so, its better to stick to what you have and upgrade only when necessary.

Understood. Thank you.
