Antivirus suggestions

This con of your is a PRO for most of the AVAST users like me, nice post overall, repped :) + Avira takes a lot of updates (in MBs) while avast updates are small in size :cool2:

Listen dude, I loads of experience in Anti-Viruses, so here goes...

1. Avast

Pros - great AV, has a fantastic Schedule thorough virus scan before windows boot. It therefore can remove any virus as Windows is not booted at startup.

Cons - has the stupidest Media player like interface for an AV product, cannot ignore properly if a false positive file needs to run, such as a Game trainer

2. Avira Free or otherwise. Review

Pros - One of the top rated AV's, excellent detection, has great exclusion list so one can run a so called virus infected file such as a game trainer without the AV nagging

Cons- Overzealous in protection, The interface isn't intuitive at all, interface needs real getting used to

Paid---

3.Kaspersky IS 2010 Review

Fantastic product, only Rs.350, you can't ask for anything better

4. Bitdefender IS 2010 Review

The awesomest Internet security Suite, simply because it is the only one with Profiles such as Novice, Intermediate, Advanced which lets you select how comfortable u are with security questions, Only Rs.350 again!

Cons - Kept deleting files inspite of asking the AV to Quarantine

6.Norton IS 2010. Review

EXCELLENT AV, the best simlest interface out there, VERY intuitive, VERY QUICK in working and install unlike its previous 2008 and before line - shitty products!

Cons- does not have an exclusion list, so say bye bye to all your Game Trainers, keygens, cracks etc as u need to disable the AV just to run those.

I hope this helps, you can thank me with Rep points...lol ;)

Sorry Aman haven't used Eset Nod yet, though have heard a lot of good about it.

Rockfella, thanks for the REP points :)

You are right about the interface of Avast, some like it, some don't I guess I was only getting unnecessarily opinionated. I personally got very confused at first with the media player like looks of avast and actually prefer the far more efficient ways of like how Norton shows the entire STATUS of the current PC in one shot.

Cool, i've not experimented with AVs much, i prefer AVAST, i think i have healthy browsing habits so avast works fine for me. I really like it's pre-boot scan feature. For serious attacks there is always combofix!

G-Data has been rated as one of the top AVs of 2009 . Apart from that i would recommend Kaspersky and Norton 09.
Among the free AVs Avira comes out a clear winner .

For Free
Panda Cloud AV + Comodo Firewall Free or Outpost Firewall Free

Not Free
BitDefender Internet Security or Eset Smart Security

Get Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, using since last 2 years.Never had a single virus problem,I download lots of ahem softwares. Detection rate is very good.

A very Solid product.

Thanks friends, but i am confused as i know that most of the av talked above are very good when compared to avast but i am looking for a av which not only finds the right virus and destroy it, but also which can check whether the program is a virus or a keygen (keys) and such that it does not delete the keys which i hv downloaded from net.

For the above, pls give the name of av which looks after my keys not as a virus but as a normal file.

Regards

What makes u ppl think that there can't be any virus/spyware/torjan in cracks n keygen?

Avast is grt. I m using it. It can scan archive provided u have properly configured. Some ppl don't like its user interface! Why don't use skins? Lots of skin r available online. Whick other av provides skinable feature. Lastly avast updates r grt. Updated very frequently n only few hundred kbs, one can even update it on gprs

avast i have used is better atleast better than norton which is quite heavy on the system.though i had some tough times with kaspersky and later removed it therefore cant comment on that.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2010. It is working flawlessly. For those people who think Norton is a system hog.. No it isn't any more. But I have complaints about the time it takes to scan. It is notably higher than other Anti Virus programs.

Anyone tried Microsoft Security Essentials (free) yet? I've just installed it on my Win7 RC... seems to be working fine... as in... no news is good news :D

I normally use AVG though, just thought of trying this out for a while...

have installed it yesterday on Win 7, but it must be updated before using. But i can`t update it on Aircel gprs, coz the net disconnects frequently. dwnld manager didn`t help.
Will update it soon, then i will try it

I was just wondering if running two or multiple antivirus simultaneously will help?
May be if one antivirus s/w do not detect a particular threat, the other will catch it.
But that may slow the machine... any thoughts on this.

^^ Avoid running two antivirus programs on the same machine at the same time. It will tremendously slow down the machine in addition to identifying the other program as a virus itself.

If you are so paranoid, you can run a routine antivirus with real time scanning and one AV with on-demand scanner like the ClamAV. That should be okay.
