Anyone here who lives in Kolkata and has bought something fron DealExtreme?
West Bengal with its Form C requirement and all, even Indian eBay sellers don't want to ship to Kolkata.
So want to know if packages from DealExtreme are delivered properly.
DX has the option of marking the goods as gift too. Want to know if doing that helps it get past Customs.

The packages will be delivered by IndiaPost so don't think there will be any problem.

I recently sent an item to Kolkata by Speedpost from Chennai, they didn't even ask me what was inside and the item was delivered on the 3rd day.

I had ordered something from China and it was marked as gift and hence delivered by india post itself with no problems with the customs! Make sure the packaged is marked as gift and it has lower custom value

From which shop in China did you order your item? From Alibaba? Or Seeed Studio? Or somewhere else?

Been using Dealextreme for about 4 years now, no problems in dispatches to Calcutta. Sometimes packages do get lost in transit (happened once on a shipment while I was in Delhi) but C form is not required.

I order all the time from international sellers and there is no problem with form 50 unless you decode to use a 'reputed courier'. By post - USPS, China Post, Canada Post HK Post or Taiwan (tried all) there is no issue. Tried all of the above. Had severe problems with FedEx the one time I tried and do not buy unless the seller can ship through regular post.

Customs clearance can be a bit of a hassle, you may have to make a trip to the customs clearing center if your shipment gets stuck and explain things personally. I never paid a bribe, but talking nicely always helps. I do pay the customs as required, it is collected by the postman at my door, or at the post office.

Suggest you pay for registered post, cost is about $2 extra for most shipments out of China. It really helps things reach, and reach on time. I have had one or two unregistered parcels go missing.

What is the customs duty on the products? Is it uniform rate for all products or does the rate vary for different types of products?

If I get the parcels marked as Gift, would I still have to pay Customs duty?

Had to pay duty is your shipment is insured and above a certain value.

Helps to have a value marked, mostly small stuff slips through though sometimes if the package weighs a bit you may be charged.

You should assume you will be charged ~20% of shipment value as duty. Rest is up to you, if there is even a whiff of suspicion be prepared for a long and costly situation. Best pay a small amount (small declared value) to help your case. In the long run, it works out fine that way.

It's based on your luck, that's all. Would suggest not marking as a gift, it's usually a sign of trying to avoid duty. Good Luck.

@cranky , @rajveersingh09, @varkey Thanks for the information.
By the way, which form of payment did you guys use? Credit card? Paypal?
Saw in a post that even Indian Debit Cards were being accepted by DX. Anyone know which debit cards are allowed? Can the normal SBI Maestro Card(the one without expiry date, only date of issue) be used?

5 days back I ordered an extended 3500 mAh battery for my Motorola Defy from DX. I used an Indian back debit card to do the transaction. I also marked it as a gift and used 2$ more so I can track it. I have ordered it at my home in Howrah.

Some debit cards do work as others have mentioned but it has to be MasterCard or Visa. Chances of a Maestro card working is close to nil.
