Any recommended surge protectors?

Hi all,

There has been at least 1 incident in my society which caused fireworks go around the house, blowing up everything that was plugged in. Hence was looking for some good surge protectors for my computer. Looked around a bit on amazon,
These are definitely a scam and not surge protectors at all: https://www.amazon.in/Wipro-multiplug-built-Surge-Protector/dp/B089Z7Q9F2 and https://www.amazon.in/GM-Modular-3012-Travel-Universal/dp/B008LQOZ2E They contain absolutely no logic inside and are basically multi-plugs, confirmed via the images in the reviews.

Apart from this these Belkin extension boards claim to have surge protectors but I can't really be sure, https://www.amazon.in/Belkin-Essential-F9E400zb1-5MGRY-4-Socket-Protector/dp/B0083T231O

If someone has used these or any others please it let me know, thanks.
 
What is your intended use ? What electricals or equipment do you wish to connect to the surge protector?
Also how much are you willing to spend.
Reason being you do get high quality surge protectors depending on the requirement.
 
All extension boxes which acts as surge protectors consists of MOV(Metal oxide varistor). One can get it for pretty cheap like 15-20 Rs and solder it in on your current extension board/socket that you use for supply.

Other recommend option: AC surge protector device which can use for whole house.
Buy AC surge protector device as per your house wiring phase(single/Three phase) PROVIDED EARTHING Wire should be perfect condition to the earthing ground terminal. If colour changes from green, one should replace it. Brands: elmex, feeder are widely used which comes around 1-2k INR.

Thank you, I'll look into the MOVs. They seem interesting and doable. The whole house one is currently not viable for me.
 
APC UPS have surge protection, not sure if the lower models have it or not, but if it mentions surge protection, I trust it.

1: if we did not do any separate earthing in our house that implies the earthing is that of the electric supplier's, correct?
2: this device needs to installed with the main switch thus controlling the whole house with 1 switch, or at every terminal having some appliances?

This is not a surge protector. This is just a extension strip. Fuse will only help for short circuit and current.

Basically, Device should setup after the meter before wires entering MCB/DB box in the house such that whole house will be protected.
Device should be installed in simple parallel connection.
Separate earthing is not required but it's recommend to have dedicated earthing for surge protector.

Do you have any suggestions for MOVs? I looked at the datesheet of a couple and it seems ~250V to 300V would be good. (Model no. starting with said value, current draw accordingly, took this amount so that it starts conducting when the voltage rises. Is this too high? Too low?)

How high are the voltage spike usually?
 
I have had this device ACCUREX D9050 installed just after my meter.

It's a 3 phase protection with 2 minutes auto cutoff after which it automatically reconnects with switches to bypass itself per phase.

Got it for 7k a while back in Pune and it's a Pune based brand but when I checked recently appears to have shut down.

Nope, it has an actual fuse which melts thereby cutting off the excess flow of current. You just have to replace the fuse bulb later which is not more than ₹10.
 
Yes and that fuse is inside that Surge Protector. These kind of surge protectors have this fuse inside them which can be easily replaced.
No, Surge protectors shunt momentary spikes of voltage to ground. They act much fast as compared to fuses.

Fuses, on the other hand, are simple devices that operate by melting when they are exposed to a high current.

They are two different things, although there is some overlap in their functioning and usage.
