here is the latest update regarding MSI RMA Policy from now on :

+1
I was about to post this myself. I cannot vouch for this personally, but their service/support policies have improved a lot recently.

msi has an excellent after sales service - i can vouch for it! i visited digilink's service center in ahmedabad with my laptop and they quickly added the extra ram and offered me some chai - which was nice bcoz it was a cold winter afternoon in ahmedabad!

msi will replace your faulty hardware within 24-72 hours and not repair it when it comes to your laptop. don't know about other pc peripherals but i guess the process should be pleasant.

Sorry, I had forgot to update my experience. One month later I received a mail from their Cochin Service Centre suggesting to format and reinstall the OS and if that fails to solve the problem, to send the Mobo to them for repair. Fortunately the first option worked!:)

Digilink at lamy(mumbai) doesnt replace high end mobo .Because they dont have any stock of high end mobo. They try repairing the mobo my resetting the i/o chip and whatever it takes.
First few they try to fool u by giving excuses .Then when there is no choice they tell to write a note of the problem so that they can send it to delhi(LIE).
Then give replacement after going again and again.
It was my friends experience .There is a guy named anil(he is the head of the repairing process) he doesnt know a thing in the mobo's bios just knows to select optimized setting and then save and enter.
Would suggest to buy ASUS cause gigabyte is also handled by digilink

ohh trust me , you dont wanna get into Asus , the RMA is handled by Rashi , i think we all have seen enough Rashi stories here.

What about MSI products being sold thru Top Notch Infotronix (Zebronics?)? Is the RMA procedure the same, or does it vary with distributor?

No matter where or who you buy MSI from the warranty will be handled by the service center itself.

If your ok with buying Gigabyte without ny issues you should buy MSI too with the same level of after sales service expectation as now Gigabyte / MSI Service Centers are the same.
