Has anyone here updated their iPhone 4S to iOS 8.1.1 or whatever the latest iOS 8 version?
I need to know how the performance is of iOS 8 on 4S. I have 7.0.4 still installed and had jailbroken using evasi0n.

Yes, mine is on 8.1.1 now.

I would suggest stick to 7.x . When I updated to 8.0.1 and 8.0.2, performance degraded significantly. However, it is better in 8.1.1 now.

7.x was the best experience for me with no lag.

The performance is bad in 5 itself :(

iOS 5 was launched with iphone 4S, i dont think there was any performance issues back then, iphone 4 and 3GS were running fine on iOS 5.

Do a fresh restore on iOS 8 on older devices and use the backup, that way performance is better.

He is saying that iOS 8 performance on iPhone 5 is also bad. Not iOS 5.1.1.

Can you enlighten how to do a fresh restore of iOS 8 ? Currently on 8.0.2. and regretting the upgrade

I have a query about upgrading the iPhone from one device to another and keeping everything intact. We have never done this before so not sure.
My wife has an iPhone 4 currently and she will soon be switching to iPhone 6 Plus. Now I want to ensure that she can move her data and everything on her existing phone (including camera pics and videos and apps and contacts) to the new phone. And yes we wish to also jailbreak the phone after that.
I am confused about the steps to do for this. I am enlisting the steps here, please check and see if I am wrong somewhere or am missing something ?

1. Download the latest version of iTunes on PC.
2. Connect iPhone 4 to laptop and take a manual backup of the phone on the laptop.
3. Disconnect the iPhone 4 from the laptop.
4. Turn on 6 plus and activate it by inserting a SIM card in it.
5. Connect the iPhone 6 Plus to laptop and shift + restore (by choosing the IPSW manually) on the plus and restore it to latest iOS version ?
6. Once on iOS 8.1.1, jailbreak using TaiG tool and once verified that JB is done then restore the iphone 4 backup to the new phone.

Can I expect that all the contacts, SMSes, whatsapp chats, camera roll and videos, apps (not the ahem ones) will be restored fine on the new device ?

Are these the correct steps ?

Yes these steps will work. Recently I migrated data in similar manner from iPhone 4 to 5S.

On one hand 5S was ready with iOS 8.1. I took iPhone 4 complete backup, restored 5S from same backup, performed JB and i stalled few tweaks. I have not yet upgraded to 8.1.1

Coming to iPhone 4S query, analogy can be as follows;
iOS 7.0.4 on iPhone 4 ~ iOS 8.0.x on iPhone 4S
iOS 7.1.2 on iPhone 4 ~ iOS 8.1.1 on iPhone 4S

In my opinion should not update to it. There is an article regarding same on Ars Technica.

Doesn't your analogy mean I SHOULD be updating to 8.1.1 for my 4S. Since I believe iOS 7.1.2 on iPhone 4 is better than 7.0.4. My wife's iPhone 4 is on 7.1.2 currently and although I haven't used it extensively but I think it is Ok.

Also you performed JB AFTER backup or before ? Because usually it is said to do JB before backup.

Can you link me the article.

If considered from 8.0.x one should upgrade to 8.1.1 on iPhone 4S but not from iOS 7.x. Whereas in case of iPhone 4, I moved to 7.1.2 mainly due to visuals; had it been case where iOS 6.1 was with such visuals, I would have stayed on iOS 6.x. Also one aspect was that apps were getting heavy and some even required only iOS 7 and above. In such event one does not left with any option.

I was and even now I am not sure about JB/backup order. On the day I was setting up my phone, I wanted to have a working device first with all my data which can be tinkered later. Hence I restored backup first and then did JB.

Back to my query about updating iPhone 6 plus. I have updated my wife's iPhone 6 plus to 8.1.1 and I know 8.1.2 has been released
Now the only thing remaining is that I have to take backup of her iPhone 4 and restore that backup to the new phone.
So I want to know whether I will be able to restore the backup without upgrading to 8.1.2 ?
The reason I am asking is because if I am forced to update to iOS 8.1.2 then I will keep its IPSW for downloading at night since it is huge like 2Gb or so.

I was able to "Restore Backup" without going to iOS 8.1.2 on the 6 plus.

Coming back to main topic. There is 8.1.2 now that supposedly increases performance of iPhone 4S. If anyone here updated it please let us know. I feel on 7.0.4 currently my 4S is having lags a lot of time. Not while moving between springboard screens but within some apps. Also apps don't seem to stay in memory for even 2 minutes and they sort Of reload from main page whenever I switch back to them.
For example I am In Whatsapp and need to go to safari for something and come back to whatsapp in like 2 minutes and it starts from beginning and not directly where I left.

Hence I was thinking whether I should go with the update to iOS 8.1.2

What I have observed from iPhone 4 on 7.1.2 is that, though base OS was running well, applications were getting heavy. Example would be WhatsApp update after 2.11.9. It was running good earlier but that update had its effects. Similar was true for Viber up to an extent. Now since I have moved to a 5S, same apps are smooth. Your best bet would be to get an answer from someone who have actually updated 4S to 8.1.2 (same as thread title).

Yes I have seen that. Whatsapp takes lot of time to open on my 4S while it is very snappy on my wife's 6 Plus.

There are few apps which did not much impact like Telegram used to run pretty smooth on iPhone 4. But with time, more apps are going to get more demanding and optimization will shift towards newer handsets. This also might be an signal to requirement of upgrading phone.

The thing is I don't see any other plausible reason to "upgrade". I am completely ok with my 4S for now and don't see need for a newer iPhone. May be I will have to live with the slow opening times of apps and such for now.

Yes, for now can live with it. I would provide one suggestion based on my experience, please do NOT update application(s) without checking for usefulness of update and performance after update.
