Hi guys, i'm about to rent a wifi modem from bsnl for my dataone connection, but i want to the following things from guys who already using it

1. How much distance(range) you are getting the signal from that modem

2. Can we assign it such that can use the wifi directly without connecting to pc, say if i wanna browse using my wifi enabled pda , can i do it by just connecting to wifi modem.? ?

its kinda hard to get one. lots have tried , but eventually given up and bought ordinary modems since they seem to be forever out of stock

I had applied for it a month ago, when i called, they told me to come with old modem(type 1). . Wanna go and check out..

I am using BSNL type 2 modem from last 2 years..wi-fi signal is quite good..easily panitrates 3 walls..

Answer to the second question..I have not tried it but I think it should be possible..

can you pls mention the approximate distance.. (with walls in between)

Range depends on the modem model.

As for the second question, yes, once you configure your wifi modem to be always on (disable PPPoE), you can use the wifi from your PDA directly without having to turn on the computer.

Bsnl's giving some huawei branded ones right? How much range can be expected in it?

That was long back..they now give utstarcom..

They have excellent range unless your purpose is to provide wifi to you neighbours too:lol:

so remember to secure it :@ my parents were given a wi-fi modem by default :P with w-fi unprotected n switched on. 1 month mom was wondering why theres a huge bill  I went home and realised what was happening :P
