Anyone using nLited versions of WinXP

Basically, I'm trying to find out if user experiences of people using nLited versions of their operating system. i.e. are they facing any problems? Any success stories like I managed to remove IE completely from my system or I managed to integrate SP2 and hotfixes in my installation CD and am currently using this install etc.

Please post your experiences in this thread.
 
using it .. very happily -

How ever the only reason I wanted was to move the user folders "documents and settings" to another drive other then the one the OS was installed on.

second the above..

using an nlited version of windows.. my copy of windows already had sp2, but ive included hot fixes all the way upto end of September.. i make a new updated disc every 3 months.

its an unattended install and i remove all the stuff i dont use like messenger, games, etc.. have had a great experience wid it till now :)

Go to regedit, the key to find hotfixes is hklm>Microsoft>WindowsNT>CurrentVersion>Hotfix. That has a list of all the hotfixes applied. You can also use this tool hotfixcleaner to see the hotfixes and patches on your system.

Nlite is very useful, I have been using nlite for most of my installations to integrate drivers for a long time now. For hotfixes and patches I use RyanVM which is IMHO better for that purpose.

Ps: There is nlite for Vista called Vlite

Ok let me clarify - Where do we find the installable files for the hot fixes etc.

Do you use RyanVM on the installation first or nLite? I've faced some overlap issues with using both so I was wondering if the overlap would have an impact on installation.

even i have had issues integrating RyanVM's packs wid my nlited version of windows though theoretically there shouldnt be any... so decided to do it the round abt way by dling every patch/hotfix

btw.. forgot to mention.. i also integrate all my drivers nd a coupla basic apps such as winrar, foobar, nd firefox
 
I used nlite mainly for integrating Sata Sil on my previous system. But if I am not integrating drivers I use RyanVM. I have used RyanVM on a HP DV2000 and SonySZ, and thats so much more convenient than looking for the patches and hotfixes or using windows update. No issues so far but I have never mixed up nlite and ryanvm.

I have a 15 second bootup on a cyrix C3 processor machine using a bare minimal version of XP stripped using nlite

That's what I like to hear :thumb: . It this part of your HTPC project someone was talking about? What did you strip out to get that boot speed?
 
hmm using the Windows Black Edition ..which has got some extra themes ..and some latest hot fixes.pre installed also it is an unattended setup..

it is made using Nlite.

no problems till now..but the only problem u can face is i guess u cant repair a nlite version of windows xp by booting from the XP cd..u just need to reinstall by formatting if u have any problems.

by the way has any one tried the vista flavor of n lite.

i used it to install on a friends PC and it even worked on 256 mb ram ..with the aero feature off ..and only by removing the extra languages support in Vista ..u gain 2-3 gb of HD space..

over all u save 3.5-4 gb of HDD space..and also on a system with 512 mb of RAM and a decent graphics card..like my PC..the n lite version of vista runs butter smooth..unlike the original vista.

also Nlite vista version fits on a 700mb cd with most features in the cd.

nah, a HTPC wouldn't even crawl on a C3

this was for my Car PC

I don't clearly remember what I removed, but I do recollect being very aggressively weaning out components

Instead of removing what I don't need, I unselected all compoenents /services and then selected only what I need

Where are these available? Sounds good. Maybe Microsoft should nLite and sell Vista :D .

So what did you keep? I'm curious as I intend to make a compact version and want to achieve fast boot up also. How is the performance of your car PC?

it's been a long while mate...

so don't exactly rememebr

and in any case, what you decide to keep will depend on what you intend to do with machine...

e.g dial-up-services are something i knew i'll never use in the car but the same may not hold true for you

Hmm...not exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking to reduce the no.of existing Windows apps and install only a few choice apps. But the nLited Vista sounds promising :).

Ok. Thanks anyway for your input. Was considering doing all this but now, I see that ppl have already taken the effort and lots of options are avbl(if you know what I mean ;) ). The USB stick edition and Tiny XP interest me. Even the mini Vista edition looks good. I think I'll have a look at those.
